What Can Be Done About Uneven Breasts?

Uneven Breast

Very few women have perfectly symmetrical breasts. In fact, it’s rare for breasts to be entirely identical. Although for most women, the differences are unnoticeable. Some women do have asymmetry that is more noticeable and even severe.

Having asymmetrical breasts can make it difficult to find bras that fit or to wear clothing comfortably. Many women even feel discomfort with the way their breasts look side-by-side. If having asymmetrical breasts is worrying you, rest assured there are many things you can do to give your breasts a more even appearance.

Causes of Breast Asymmetry

Breast tissue is made up of milk ducts, lobes, fatty tissue, and other matter. Because breast tissue is continuously changing due to hormones, weight gain/loss, and even age, it’s extremely common for breasts and nipples to be uneven in appearance. Breasts may also appear more asymmetrical at some times than others.

A variety of factors can cause breast asymmetry. Some include weight gain or loss, uneven development during adolescence, pregnancy, breastfeeding, uneven shrinkage while aging, medical conditions, breast infections, breast cancer, or poor results from a prior breast augmentation procedure.

As many women are electing for cosmetic procedures to fix noticeable asymmetry, breast augmentations have now become one of the most requested cosmetic procedures. Below are a few options for those interested in correcting the asymmetry of their breasts.

Breast Reduction

Smaller breasts may fit your frame better or give the perkier appearance you want. If your breasts are slightly uneven but you enjoy your current cup size, then a breast reduction in the larger of your two breasts may be the option for you. This procedure is optimal if you have more than a cup size difference in your breasts and wish to keep the size of your smaller breast.

Keep in mind that the more reduction in a breast, the more likely that breast will need to have a lift done to make the tissue firm and perkier. Ask your doctor to explain the pros and cons of breast reduction in your initial consultation.

Breast Lift

A common problem with women as they age, have children, or breastfeed is sagging of the breast tissue. In some cases, breasts begin to sag away from one another, so even if they are similar in size, the breasts will appear asymmetrical.

In a breast lift, the sagging tissue is removed, and the breast is lifted to a higher point on the chest, placing the nipples in a more natural place. Your breast lift will not make your breasts appear larger unless you are getting breast implants, but it will give you a more symmetrical placement and a perkier appearance.

Breast Augmentation

Breast asymmetry can be corrected easily through breast augmentation. Depending on the severity of your asymmetry and desired results, the surgeon may recommend placing breast implants in one or both of your breasts.

If your breasts differ in more than a cup size or you want larger breasts than you currently have, then an augmentation might be your best option. Your doctor will show you different breast implant sizes to choose from. If augmenting both breasts, the implant sizes will differ to make the final results more symmetrical.

Breast Augmentation Results

While breast augmentation will instantly increase breast size, they will not look their best immediately after surgery. It takes time for breast tissue and chest muscles to adjust to having implants present.

There are a few parts of the healing process that is normal and should not cause worry. At first, the breasts will seem too high on the chest. The swelling will also cause the breasts to appear distorted or feel firmer than usual for some time. The majority of swelling resolves in two to three weeks, and after about three months, the implants will soften and settle into the more natural position.

At your initial consultation, your surgeon will discuss all of this with you in great detail and help you arrive at the ideal method to achieve your unique goals. Together, you will also review the different breast implant options available, as both saline and silicone implants can deliver exceptional results when correcting breast asymmetry.

Breast Lift and Implants After Pregnancy

Breast Lift and Implants After Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a wonderful phase in a woman’s life. It allows you to experience the happiness, contentment and fulfillment that comes from carrying and bringing a new life into this world. And while pregnancy is an incredible, life-changing experience, it also brings significant changes to a woman’s body, particularly to her breasts.

After pregnancy, you may find yourself wanting a lift or implants to restore the look of your breasts. In this blog, we break down some of the most commonly asked questions and misconceptions of having a breast lift or implants after giving birth.

Post Pregnancy Changes

Pregnancy causes various changes to your body, especially to your breasts. Due to the hormonal changes and imbalance, your breasts will be in a constant state of flux. Some changes will be permanent but generally, these changes will be temporary. Some of these will include a change in bust size, drooping or sagging breasts, protruding or stretched areolas, and uneven breast size. These changes are dependent on a number of factors – age, lifestyle, genetics and skin sensitivity. The good news is – all of these changes can be addressed with the right procedure.

If there is loss of volume in the upper portion of your breasts due to post-pregnancy changes then you are an excellent candidate for a breast lift or even breast augmentation. Both procedures will increase the fullness, projection and perkiness of your breasts, and improve the overall balance of your figure.

Stretch Marks

Another concern you may have about your post-baby breasts are stretch marks. Usually, the stretched skin returns to normal after pregnancy. But in some cases (usually genetics), stretch marks appear and stay forever. If your siblings, mom or even grandma had stretch marks post pregnancy, then chances are greater that you will too. A little correction will help as well.

A breast lift (Mastopexy) will help make your breasts firmer by removing any excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the breasts. This will help with stretch marks or stretched skin in being restored to a more youthful tightness. Many of our patients choose to get breast implants at the same time to achieve optimal results.

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is one of the ultimate culprits behind the changes that happen to your breasts. Regardless if you’ve had just one or multiple kids, the impact that this has on your breasts is tremendous.

Think of the number of times that you have nursed your baby, the recurring inflation and deflation of your breasts, and not to mention, sore nipples. What’s worse is if you’re a constant victim of mastitis – blocked milk ducts.

Breastfeeding can lead to any of the following changes:

  • Shrinking breasts
  • Irregular lumps
  • Sagging skin
  • Smaller / bigger nipples
  • Irregular breast shapes

Fear not as you are not alone in this post-pregnancy journey. This is where a breast lift and/or breast augmentation can help. After pregnancy and breastfeeding, a breast lift is designed to enhance your breast shape and correct drooping, sagging breasts. Breast augmentation will restore lost volume and projection.

Most of our patients ask if it’s okay to get breast implants before having children, or whether it’s better to wait until after childbirth. And the truth is – we don’t have a definite answer to that. It actually varies from person to person. Pregnancy affects each woman differently.

If you do plan on becoming pregnant in the near future, within the next 12 months, then you might want to hold off on your plans of having a breast lift or breast augmentation. Why? Because your breasts will inevitably go through significant changes throughout your pregnancy and your shape, volume and size may change.

However, if you are done having children, and are ready to restore the youthful look of your pre-pregnancy breasts, you may be an excellent candidate for a breast lift or implants.

For the Most Natural Breast Implants, Try “Gummy Bears”

gummy bear implants

New strides in breast implant technology have led to the development of form-stable implants, which have widely expanded the options for breast enhancement. The silicone gel in the implant is thicker, so it maintains its shape and causes less wrinkling. Even if you were to cut a form-stable implant in half, it would keep its shape—earning it the nickname “gummy bear” implant.

Though the implants are strong and have a less than 2% rupture rate, they are remarkably soft, making “gummy bear implants” an option for patients who have always desired breast enhancement but wanted a more natural look and feel. The teardrop shape mimics the natural shape of the breast, and they come in a variety of projections and heights depending on the shape of a woman’s torso and existing breasts.

Dr. Jeffrey Marvel:  “One of the greatest advantages I have found is the increase in the degree of lift possible with these implants. We are now able to place implants and avoid the additional scars of performing breast lifts in a large percentage of cases.  There is also a lot of increased fullness in the upper portion of the breast.”

A consultation with Dr. Jeffrey Marvel can help you decide the size and shape of gummy bear implant that’s right for you.
