Slowing the Results of Aging with Prejuvenation

Increasingly, younger women are slowing the results of aging with prejuvenation procedures that have become standard aspects of their beauty routines.

When it comes to beauty and overall well being, why wait for the signs of age to take over? It’s better to be proactive and offensive when it comes to stopping the effects of time on your face in the form of wrinkles, creases, crows’ feet, and laugh lines.

How can you prevent the results of aging? What are some procedures you could add to your regimen that would help you keep your youthful appearance?

Let’s take a look at prejuvenation procedures and how they can help you.

Top Prejuvenation Procedures

Most common among the prejuvenation procedures are injectables and fillers. These are non-surgical treatments that provide a youthful look without the cost and downtime of invasive surgery.

It is estimated that over one million men and women annually use injectables and dermal fillers, and many of these users are younger adults who are aiming to prevent aging.

Injectables and dermal fillers lessen the effects of aging skin by:

  • restoring volume around hollowed areas,
  • restoring the contours and smoothness of the face,
  • providing volume and lift to problem areas by smoothing out wrinkles,
  • plumping flat lips, and
  • correcting hollowed skin areas.

There are two types of injectables, those that relax facial muscles and thereby mend facial lines and dermal fillers that plump out wrinkles. Dermal fillers are injected directly into the skin to correct the wrinkle, depression or fold; the filler can be either naturally derived or a synthetic material.

Here’s a brief look at what we offer to patients who are interested in prejuvenation at Marvel Cosmetic.

Injectables

Botox is derived from a family of neurotoxins that relax facial muscles. By temporarily paralyzing muscles it can remove wrinkles cosmetically such as those above the eyebrows on the forehead also called frown lines, lines that form around the corners of eyes, and other facial wrinkles.

Dysport is very similar to Botox as it is from the same family of neurotoxins. With a different formulation, Dysport spreads to a wider area. The onset of Dysport is 2-5 days compared to 4-7 for Botox. There are some reports that results may not last as long as Botox, but this is still being studied.

Fillers

Juvederm: A family of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. An injection corrects moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles and lasts nine months to one year.

Restylane:  A line of hyaluronic acid fillers that provide natural-looking results by smoothing away facial wrinkles and folds.  Providing subtle lip enhancement and smoothing the lines, adding lift and volume to the cheeks.

Voluma: Voluma is also based on hyaluronic acid and used to treat the middle of the face including the nose and associated bony structures. As an HA filler, after injection, it can be shaped and molded into the desired contour. Voluma can last up to two years, almost twice as long as other fillers.

Kybella: The only FDA approved treatment to improve the appearance of extra fat below the chin, commonly known as a “double chin.” The active ingredient is based on a component the body makes for absorbing fat cells and is injected into the affected area of the chin.

Bellafill: A dermal filler that is meant to be a semi-permanent solution for wrinkles by restoring volume and fullness to the skin.  Approved since October 2006 for the treatment of nasolabial fold, commonly know as “smile lines” or “laugh lines,” it is also used for acne scars, and smoothing wrinkles.

Prevention Is The Key to Youthful Skin

Doctors have emphasized the importance of healthy habits in maintaining beautiful, youthful skin: sun protection, healthy diet, and not smoking. These mandates should be a “given,” especially when it comes to preventing wrinkled, creased, and aging skin.

Prejuvenation techniques, such as regular use of injectables and fillers begun before the signs of aging appear, can be an important partner in the war against the effects of time.

6 Ways Your Skin Benefits from Botox and Fillers

6 Ways Your Skin Benefits from Botox and Fillers

There are many reasons why Botox and fillers are popular cosmetic treatments. One reason is that they help individuals improve aspects of their skin that would be otherwise untreatable. While these procedures have been around many years, there is still confusion as to what they can do for you. We’ve put together everything you need to know about Botox and fillers and how they benefit the skin.

The Difference Between Botox and Fillers

Before we dive into the benefits, we should clarify the difference between Botox and fillers. While each have incredible benefits for the skin, they also have different characteristics and uses.

Injectables

Injectables is the umbrella term used for both Botox and fillers, as they each apply a product directly under the skin and muscle via a syringe to reduce the signs of aging.

Botox

Botox is the name of a brand, and there are similar brands such as Dysport on the market as well. Botox works by using Botulinum toxins, which are injected directly into the facial muscle in order to restrict muscle movement. Deeply etched lines in the face, often created by intense concentration or constant furrowing, will smooth out with regular use.

Fillers

Fillers differ from Botox because they are injected into the contours of your face, not to paralyze, but to add volume or plump specific areas. Some fillers are made with hyaluronic acid which fills in wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is a substance your body naturally produces to keep skin plump and hydrated. Fillers can also use fat from your body.

The Benefits of Injectables

Add Volume to Your Face

If you want to add volume to your face, fillers are a perfect choice. The best areas to target are under the eyes, thinned cheeks, and lips. Hyaluronic Acid is a natural substance, so it is ideal for anyone who suffers from severe allergy problems.

Get a Youthful Glow

As we already mentioned, Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally forming substance in the body. By adding this to the skin, you improve not just volume but the appearance. Hyaluronic acid has been noted for improving the overall condition and adding a youthful glow.

You’ll See Immediate Results

One way your skin benefits from Botox or fillers is the immediacy of the results. It only takes one session for you to notice the difference. However, the best results are achieved over time through the implementation of a treatment plan.

The Effects Are Long-Lasting

When you use a product like Botox or a similar brand, you aren’t working on the lines that are already visible but reducing the chances of developing new ones. In most cases, patients will start a treatment plan and then eventually taper off the number of injections they need.

Eliminate the Appearance of Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Botox is for those who are experiencing wrinkles in places where they hold a lot of tension; think frown lines, furrowed brows, etc. By freezing the muscles in these areas, you prevent deeper lines forming.

Improves Tension Headaches

This one isn’t about skin, but it helps so many individuals we wanted to give it a special mention. Botox is being used to treat patients with headaches. When injected into the muscles of the forehead, neck, and shoulders, it can release built-up tension, therefore, lessening the strain on the nervous system.

5 Benefits of Laser Treatments

5 Benefits of Laser Treatments

As we begin to age, we notice our skin begins to change. From wrinkles to spider veins, there are many concerns that start to surface which we would like to change, but topical treatments only go so far. If you’re looking for a rejuvenation regimen that is effective and precise, you’ll want to learn about laser treatments. Lasers work deep within the skin to restore it and offer a more youthful and natural appearance.

Eliminate Acne

From acne to acne scars, laser treatments are effective at reducing the signs of blemishes on the skin and providing individuals with clear skin.  Lasers work to penetrate deep within the dermis to kill the bacteria that causes acne. The high-concentration of monochromatic light evens out the pigmentation and helps to reduce scarring. The combination of efforts means many patients can benefit from two procedures at once. First, there is the reduction of the bacteria, and second, you can rid unwanted acne scarring that has carried over from your youth. The result is fresh, youthful looking skin.

Even Out Skin Tone

Lasers are the latest technology for skin resurfacing, that not only reduce scarring but help restore tone. They can remove wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, and cheeks. Additionally, it can help those who suffer from sunspots that are from overexposure to the sun or aging. The laser works by gently vaporizing the outer layer of sun-damaged or acne scarring to reveal smooth, fresh new skin underneath. Similarly, the laser works to phase out fine lines and wrinkles. The procedure gives your physician control over the application. Recovery time lasts about two weeks and works best for lighter skin tones.

Remove Hair

If you’re not interested in shaving, tweezing, or waxing to remove unwanted hair, laser treatments are an effective way to eliminate them altogether. Effective on almost every area of the body, lasers give precise control over what hairs to remove and can even target hairs that are dark, thick, and coarse.  The procedure is fast, which means your physician can work quickly through larger areas of the body. For example, the upper lip can be completed in minutes, and the back can take roughly an hour. Each pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second and can target multiples hairs at once. The result for most patients is permanent hair loss.

Get Rid of Spider Veins

The tiny red and blue veins with a thread-like appearance near the surface of the skin are known as spider veins. They are caused by increased pressure on the veins and can appear anywhere on the body. However, most individuals will find them on their legs and thighs. For years, there wasn’t much you could do once they started to appear, but with the introduction of laser treatments, adults now have the option to banish them for good. The procedure uses a focused beam of light on the spider vein. As the laser begins to heat up, the vein is destroyed and reabsorbed into the body after 4-6 weeks. Lasers offer precision, which means physicians can target the specific area without damaging the surrounding areas.

Feminine Rejuvenation

For women who have given birth, suffer from urge incontinence, or who have had breast cancer and can’t be on hormones, lasers are a safe and minimally invasive procedure providing tightening, strengthening, and smoothing. It can also help with unwanted secretions, increase blood flow, and sensitivity. The lasers work to stimulate and promote the production of collagen. New skin cells will be produced in the underlying layer of tissue bringing about a smoother, tighter, and healthier skin. Before treatment, a pelvic exam should be performed, and the patient must have had a routine Pap Smear within the last six months. Results are achieved over a span of three months, with the inclusion of rest and temporary abstinence as part of the recovery process.

10 Ways to Combat Fine Lines and Wrinkles

10 Ways to Combat Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Aging is a natural process, and despite our best efforts fine lines and wrinkles will eventually start to appear. At Marvel Cosmetic Surgery, we are well-versed in the best practices available to help reduce the signs of aging, so you and your skin feel supple and fresh. Below are our top ten tips to achieve that youthful glow!

1. Sunscreen and Face Wash

One of the best ways to protect your skin from external damage is by applying sunscreen daily. Collagen isn’t just lost in the aging process. Free radicals from pollution and routine exposure to the sun will also deplete collagen and slow the process of new collagen forming. So, it’s important to practice a healthy skin care routine with a face wash that draws out impurities without drying the skin. Wearing sunscreen gives the additional protection from further damage to production. When buying sunscreen look for 15SPF – 30SPF, because anything lower or higher won’t be helpful.

2. Vitamin C Peel

Vitamin C is one of the best-known defenses against free radicals. The vitamin is used in every part of the collagen process making it a critical component of boosting collagen. A Vitamin C peel is an option for anyone who suffers from fine lines and wrinkles because it deeply cleanses the pores and gently resurfacing the skin to diminish the appearance of aging. The acid found in Vitamin C also works as a bleaching agent, which can help restore imbalanced skin tone and help fade blemishes.

3. Botox

Botox is widely known for its use to reduce the signs of aging. With a few quick injections, deep lines between brows, crow’s feet, and laugh lines are all reduced in appearance.

Botox works by using Botulinum toxins, which are injected directly into the facial muscle to restrict muscle movement. Deeply etched lines in the face, often created by intense concentration or constant furrowing, will smooth out with regular use. Regular Botox treatments mean preventing new creases from forming while smoothing out the appearance of what you already have.

4. Fish Oil

Omega-3 is a substance that is not produced naturally by the body, which means we have to supplement or incorporate Omega-3 rich foods like fish oil into our diets. There are numerous benefits to upping your intake such as:

  • Decreasing inflammation
  • Healthier Hair
  • Better moods
  • Healthier Heart
  • Improved brain function

Regarding healthy skin, fish oil nourishes the skin with fats and provides vitamins to keep the skin smooth and elastic. This helps to reduce wrinkles, fine lines, and prevent skin from sagging.

5. Drink Plenty of Water

Your skin is your largest organ but is usually the last to receive nutrients. Keeping it hydrated by drinking water keeps the skin looking plump and full. It should be noted that there is a difference between having dry or dehydrated skin. Dry skin is a condition you’re born with, and you know it pertains to you because other areas of your body (hands, feet, scalp) are also dry. Dehydrated skin appears when your water intake is low. Either way, your entire body will benefit from an increase of water, by flushing out toxins and plumping up your skin.

6. Fillers

Fillers differ from Botox because they are injected into the contours of your face, not to paralyze, but to add volume or plump specific areas.

Made with hyaluronic acid fillers smooth out wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is a substance your body naturally produces to keep skin plump and hydrated. Since it already occurs in the body, these fillers are less likely to cause an allergic reaction. The filler itself has a gel-like consistency that is injected into the skin to smooth fine lines. These particular fillers can last from 6 to 12 months before being absorbed. Brands such as Juvederm, Juvederm Voluma, and Restylane are all options for those who are interested in the Hyaluronic Acid option.

7. Fat Transfers

Noninvasive fat transfers – or micro-lipo injection – add volume to the skin in the face and hands, giving you a more rested, youthful appearance. By using your body’s unwanted fat, the procedure reduces crow’s feet, laugh lines and ridges that appear as a normal part of aging. Along with improving the skin’s appearance and reversing the signs of aging, fat transfers can also repair and reconstruct skin damaged by trauma or surgery.

8. Deep Condition

Protecting yourself from dryness will eliminate red, flaky skin that highlights fine lines and wrinkles. It’s highly recommended to deep condition your skin a few times a week to continue to look fresh. You can choose between a lotion or a cream. A lotion is water-based and a little lighter for those who are on the oiler side. A cream is excellent for individuals with naturally dry and flaky skin.

9. Bone Broth

Bone broth or “stock,” is a process in which tendons, ligaments, bones, and cartilage are heated in water for a period eventually releasing healing compounds like collagen, glycine, glutamine and many others. By incorporating bone broth into your diet, you are providing your body with extra collagen that it doesn’t have to produce and improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin.

10. CO2 Laser

CO2 laser is the latest technology for skin resurfacing. It’s designed to help remove wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, and cheeks.

The Vitamin C Peel And Its Benefits

Vitamin C Peel

There are a plethora of serums, ointments, procedures, and lotions that declare it can help reduce the signs of aging. But did you know Vitamin C works wonders on treating uneven skin tone, acne, scarring, fine lines and wrinkles? The Vitamin C Peel and its benefits make it a skin care treatment well worth your while.

Vitamin C is one of the best-known defenses against free radicals (such as pollution, sun rays, and cigarette smoke) that can cause your skin to lose elasticity and sag. As a result, your skin loses its ability to shed dead skin cells, causing a dull and uneven appearance. Vitamin C works as an antioxidant to neutralize these free radicals, by preventing them from oxidizing on your skin.

When there is a build-up of dead skin cells on the face, the skin in the area begins to appear aged and worn. With the help of a Vitamin C peel, you can slough off the dead skills cells, so your body can replace them with new ones giving you a fresh and vibrant glow.

This peel can also help anyone suffering from acne, as it deeply cleanses pores and provides an anti-bacterial action to prevent them from reappearing. The acid found in Vitamin C also works as a bleaching agent that can help restore imbalanced skin tone and help fade blemishes.

This process is perfectly safe for all skin types and suitable for any age, with no recovery time like traditional peels. Virtually pain-free, the peel has a gentle tingling feeling from the ingredients penetrating the lower layers of the skin. Most results can be seen after one session, but it’s advisable as with a beauty routine to maintain results with multiple treatments.
