Cosmetic Surgery Procedures To Consider This Winter!

Now that the seasons are changing, I’ve had lots of patients asking me: “What time of year is best for cosmetic surgery?” That’s an especially good question this year, because COVID has everyone’s holiday plans up in the air, and since everyone is wearing masks all the time.

The Winter is always a good time for any kind of surgery since it’s cooler, and you can wear baggy/bulky clothes to conceal your swelling and bruising. But some procedures are especially good to do in the winter.

This year, eyelid surgery is great any time of year. Everyone is wearing masks, so their eyes are all that most other people see.

Upper eyelid surgery is a quick procedure with very little downtime – Reagan at our Spring Hill office had hers done yesterday (Thursday) and has a full day scheduled next Tuesday. Since it’s cool outside, she’ll have less bruising and swelling than if she had her surgery in the summer, and she won’t miss any fun outdoor activities since the days are so short now. Chin implants, lip lifts (check out this excellent article – ), and facelifts are also great procedures to do now, because your mask will hide your swelling while you recuperate!

Any kind of body contouring surgery (liposuction, breast lift, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and BBL) is great to have during the Winter. First of all your recovery will be a little easier because of the cool weather and your ability to hide your swelling under sweats. Second, most people are a bit more sedentary in the Winter, so resting during your recovery is a little easier. Finally, and maybe most importantly, November through February are a great time to have breast augmentation, tummy tuck, liposuction, and BBL, since you’ll be totally recovered and ready to wear your swimsuit when the pools open in April!

Brazilian Butt Lift

The Brazilian Butt Lift, or BBL, is one of the fastest growing cosmetic procedures in the country. Just in 2012, only about 8,500 such procedures were done in the US, compared to over 34,000 in 2019. More than any other procedure, its growth has been fueled by the rise of social media. However, along with its exponential growth, there have been concerns over its safety, with some preliminary studies labeling it as having “the highest mortality among cosmetic surgical procedures.”

Although there have indeed been cases of mortality related to the BBL in the US and the rest of the world, newer studies have demonstrated that using proper technique significantly reduces the risk to levels comparable to other cosmetic procedures. If you are interested in a BBL, in addition to asking about board certification, you should have a frank discussion with your surgeon about his or her training and experience doing the procedure, their assessment of the risks and mortality associated with it, and the measures they will take to minimize these risks.

The most important one of these measures includes injecting the fat over the gluteus muscles, but there are many others, such as those proposed by the Multi-Society Gluteal Fat Grafting Task Force or the World Association of Gluteal Surgeons. Just like with any other consultation, your surgeon should instill confidence not only in his or her ability to provide you with a great cosmetic result, but also with performing the procedure as safely as possible.

My Favorite Procedure

As a cosmetic surgeon in practice for nearly 30 years, I have found rhinoplasty to be my favorite operation.  Hardly any surgery gives patients more satisfaction than a well planned and executed rhinoplasty procedure.

This procedure is something they and everyone else sees every day for the rest of their lives.  So the stakes are high.  Sometimes the slightest alterations, which are preferable to drastic changes,  can make the biggest impact and produce safer more reliable results.  My favorite cases in particular are young female patients who are very attractive but feel self- conscious about their nose.  One frequent comment I get a lot is “I got my daddy’s nose!”  Often times they do not have a feminine nose to match their face.  When the nose fits in harmony to the face one can appreciate the overall beauty of the face, rather than the eye being drawn to a flawed feature like a large nasal hump.  From the surgeons stand-point, the rhinoplasty procedure is a life-long learning procedure.  It is the most difficult surgery to master.  When I get the result that I am striving for, and have a happy patient, then it makes all the hard work and years of study worth it all.

Otoplasty To Correct Protruding Ears

Otoplasty is not usually a recognized term outside the world of cosmetic surgery. This cosmetic ear surgery is often known as “pinning back” the ears. Otoplasty to correct protruding ears can improve the shape, position, or proportion of the ear. It can also correct defects in the ear structure due to injury or trauma.

What Causes Protruding Ears?

Protruding ears occur for many reasons and affects around five percent of the general population. Some attribute it to genetics, but most often, it happens randomly. Protruding ears occur by either the overdevelopment or underdevelopment of ear cartilage. It could also be the result of an injury to the ears.

Some ear deformities are self-correcting in babies, but if an external ear deformity has not self-corrected a week after birth, either Otoplasty or a non-surgical correction may needed.

Why Choose Otoplasty?

The correction of even minor deformities can have profound benefits to a person’s appearance and self-esteem. When the ears are too prominent, they can dominate a person’s entire appearance. Some ears protrude out at the sides too much, and others are just too large. Many children who have larger ears get teased because of their size or shape. This can lead to issues with self-esteem. Even adults with protruding ears can feel embarrassed to the point where it affects their everyday lives.

If protruding or disfigured ears bother you or your child, you may want to consider this procedure.

Procedure & Recovery

During the initial consultation, your doctor will answer all questions and discuss what to expect during the procedure and recovery. Most Otoplasties are performed in the surgeon’s office or an outpatient facility.

The actual surgery will last about two to three hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure for your particular case. Adults usually go home the same day, although with children, the doctor may prefer they stay in the hospital for one night. If you are undergoing a more complex procedure as an adult, you also may be required to stay in the hospital overnight.

For adults, the surgeon will probably use a local anesthesia with a sedative. Children will likely receive general anesthesia to put them to sleep, ensuring they cannot move around during the operation.

The incision is made behind the ear and will leave a thin scar, but it will be hidden. The scar will fade over time and in most cases becomes barely noticeable.

Bandages will stay over the ears for several days after surgery. After removing the bandages, a patient will wear a loose but supportive headband over the ears at night. This will help remove tension from the ears and prevent the ears from being pulled forward if the patient moves while sleeping.

Patients should plan to stay home for at least one week after the surgery. Regular activity and exercise can restart within two weeks. Activities that could cause trauma or injury to the ears during the recovery period should be avoided. It is crucial to avoid physical contact sports, such as judo, rugby, or football, for at least three months. Patients can resume swimming after about eight weeks if healed.

Numbness and mild bruising may last a few weeks after the procedure. The ears may also feel stiff for several months. Soreness, particularly at night, can last for a few months.

For best results, schedule the Otoplasty when the ears reach their full size, and the cartilage is completely formed. This happens typically around five years of age. For children with severely protruding ears, many recommend having the surgery at an early age before they are subjected to psychological stress related to the condition. However, it is never too late to make a change, and many adults also undergo this surgery.

Regardless of the reason for considering Otoplasty, the procedure has an exceedingly high rate of patient satisfaction.

How to Dramatically Change Your Appearance with Cosmetic Surgery

Whether you’re dissatisfied with the size or shape of your nose or the size of your breasts, or diet and exercise aren’t making the muffin top budge, cosmetic surgery may be the next step for you. The truth is that if you aren’t happy with what you see in the mirror, your self-esteem takes a beating with every glance.

You can dramatically change your appearance with cosmetic surgery. Depending upon your specific situation, you can either add or take away to your physique to achieve the look of your dreams. Cosmetic surgery patients routinely report an increase in confidence and overall well-being once their “outside” matches what they feel on the inside.

As cosmetic surgical procedures have evolved over the years, they have become less and less invasive while producing more natural results. Today, many procedures are affordable yet effective, and they can dramatically change your appearance.

Erase the Years and Look Younger

Patients have always wanted to stop the advance of time and the toll it takes on our skin. Popular age-defying procedures, such as injectables, lasers, and fillers, offer dramatic results, giving older skin a youthful glow. There’s nothing more exciting than looking 5, 10, or 15 years younger!

These types of procedures are typically quick, non-surgical, have little recovery time, and offer incredible and drastic results.

According to Allure magazine, “injectables, lasers, and skin resurfacing can be quick, lunchtime procedures, often with immediately visible effects and limited downtime. Botox and fillers have become so mainstream that four-fifths of all treatments performed by facial surgeons in 2018 were cosmetic, non-surgical procedures.”

Blast the Fat with Liposuction

No matter how much we diet and exercise, sometimes there’s stubborn fat that just won’t budge. For those areas that torment you, you may want to consider the ever-popular and super-effective liposuction.

Liposuction still reigns supreme when it comes to medical intervention for fat elimination. This

surgery has come a long way in the past 20 years with shorter recovery times and improved doctor techniques to reduce bruising and swelling. It’s not uncommon for a patient to have liposuction on one specific area (most commonly, the thighs, stomach, or buttocks) in the afternoon and go back to work the same week.

For a complete updated look and total-body makeover, many patients choose to have liposuction performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as a facelift, breast reduction, or “tummy tuck.”

Not Born With It? No Problem!

Often, we’re troubled by something in our appearance that stems from a part of our physique that’s not easily changed: small breasts, a crooked nose, or a flat butt.

Having a procedure to reform, enhance, enlarge, or correct aspects of your appearance will have a dramatic result. No matter what your concern, we can help! We offer:

  • Brazilian Butt Lift – a specialized fat transfer procedure that augments the size and shape of the buttocks without using implants
  • Buttock Implant – enhances the appearance, shape, and size of the buttocks using implants.
  • Breast Augmentation – uses breast implants to create fuller breasts.
  • Breast Lift – raises and firms breasts by removing surplus skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the breasts.
  • Rhinoplasty – corrects cosmetic problems with the nose, like a bump or a hook, as well as structural issues, like difficulty breathing due to a deviated septum.

Get Dramatic Results with Cosmetic Surgery

A “new you” is not far away. Cosmetic surgery offers a variety of options for creating a dramatic shift in your appearance and your self-confidence.

Brazilian Butt Lift Recovery Tips

As with any surgery, the recovery period for a Brazilian Butt Lift is an important time for your healing to ensure the final results meet your expectations.

A Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) takes fat from other areas of the body (often the stomach, hips, and thighs) and transfers it to the buttocks. After the surgery, not only will the buttocks area be sore, but the areas from which the fat was taken may also be sore. Typically, the pain will be minimal, will lessen quickly, and will be easily managed with medication.

The more challenging aspect of recovery is the restrictions placed on using the buttocks area. Sitting, sleeping, and walking must all be modified in order to allow the buttocks to heal.

We offer these Brazilian Butt Lift recovery tips to help you better anticipate what you can expect following your cosmetic procedure:

  • Most patients will be up and walking within 1-2 days after the procedure. You may resume light activities within 1 week after surgery.
  • You will not be allowed to sit or lie directly on your buttocks for at least 8 weeks after surgery. You will need to sleep on your stomach or side.
  • You will be given a compression garment to treat the areas where the liposuction was performed. You will need to wear this garment for at least 8 weeks after surgery.
  • Most patients will be allowed to resume all normal activities 8 weeks after surgery.
  • Even after the first 8 weeks of recovery, patients should still avoid sitting for prolonged periods of time and should use a cushion when sitting.
  • Be patient. After surgery, you’ll see a lot of bruising and swelling. It could take as long as 6 months before your body will reveal the final result. That’s all part of the healing process.

It’s also helpful to keep in mind some important Do’s and Don’ts following your BBL procedure.

  • Follow your doctor’s instructions faithfully, including obeying restrictions on sitting and lying on your buttocks, and take all prescribed medications.
  • Walk and stretch your legs gently. This will ensure proper circulation and help prevent blood clots following surgery.
  • Wear your compression garment at all times except during showering.

Do Not:

  • Sit or lie on your buttocks up to 8 weeks following surgery (confirm specific requirements with your doctor).
  • Put any stress on the area of the buttocks that received fat transplants; this includes sitting or lying on the area or engaging in any strenuous activity (for up to 8 weeks after surgery, to be confirmed with your doctor).

Extreme Weight Loss and Sagging Skin – What You Can’t Fix at the Gym!

You’ve worked hard and the scales prove it! The fat is gone, but with your extreme weight loss, you’re unfortunately left with sagging skin. While some areas of skin may tighten on their own during the weight loss and maintenance process, many previously obese individuals find that the excess flab can’t be fixed at the gym.

Cosmetic surgery can help you get rid of sagging skin after extreme weight loss. Marvel Cosmetic Surgery offers a variety of solutions that remove extra skin and give you a tighter, leaner body once you’ve reached your ideal weight.

Body Contouring

Body contouring, or a body lift, can give your entire body a new look. When obese individuals lose 100 pounds or more, they will likely have sagging skin in multiple areas of the body. A body lift can remove the excess skin in multiple areas in one procedure. This is an invasive and complex procedure, but it provides beautiful and lasting tightened skin and a trim silhouette for the buttocks, abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, arms, and more.

A body lift may not be necessary for every weight loss situation. If you have isolated areas of flabby skin you’d like to remove or areas you specifically want to lift and tighten, you may choose a singular procedure such as a tummy tuck, arm lift, or breast lift.

Tummy Tuck

When diet and exercise shrink your belly—but leave a ring of sagging skin around your midsection where fat used to be—a tummy tuck can help make you slim and trim.

A tummy tuck is also frequently part of an all-over body lift. Here at Marvel, we offer a regular tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, which removes excess fat and skin from the waist. In most cases, it also restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is more smooth and firm.

Patients can also opt for a mini tummy tuck. This procedure will flatten the look of the belly, but with less invasive techniques than a standard tummy tuck. It primarily focuses on excess skin and abdominal wall laxity below the belly button.

Arm Lift

After extreme weight loss, it’s quite common to have sagging skin around the arms. An arm lift will surgically remove that excess skin, giving you tighter and more defined contours.

Breast Lift

Yet another area where extreme weight loss can cause droopy, sagging skin are on the breasts. After an extreme weight loss, breasts may need contouring, tightening, or lifting. A breast lift raises and firms breasts by removing surplus skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the breasts.

Should you get cosmetic surgery to remove sagging skin after extreme weight loss?

Cosmetic surgery procedures are ideal for removing sagging skin after extreme weight loss but the individual must meet a few requirements.

  • You have reached your ideal weight and you’re committed to maintaining it through diet and exercise.
  • You’re in overall good health.
  • You don’t plan to become pregnant or you’ve completed childbearing.

If you’ve lost an extreme amount of weight but are dealing with the after-effects of unwanted sagging, loose, and droopy skin on parts of your body, we have solutions. Marvel Cosmetic Surgery can help complete your transformation so you can show off the beautiful shape and sexy contours you’ve worked so hard to obtain.

How Can I Ditch the Double Chin?

You hope it’s a trick mirror that has you seeing double! Unfortunately, many of us deal with extra fat and skin around the neck, thanks to heredity, gravity, age, and weight loss. Thankfully, you have several options to help you ditch the double chin.

At Marvel Cosmetic Surgery, we offer a variety of solutions to help eliminate your double chin. They range from non-surgical and non-invasive to surgical, more complex procedures, designed to address several issues of the face and neck in one surgery.

During your consultation, we will discuss your concerns and goals for your appearance and help you discover the best option to help you ditch your double chin once and for all.

Let’s take a brief look at the procedures that will make your face and neck tight, toned, and beautiful: face lift, neck lift, and liposuction.

Face Lift

If you’d like to address your double chin, along with other issues with sagging skin or excess fat deposits on the face, a face lift may be the best option.

Facelift surgery lifts and tightens the underlying tissues of the face to reduce sagging and excess fat deposits. The procedure involves the tightening of the facial and neck skin, the muscles, and the removal of excess skin. Often, the procedure is done in conjunction with other facial cosmetic surgeries, such as a brow and forehead lift, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)chin augmentationliposuction, and rhinoplasty (surgery of the nose). Most patients are delighted with their results after a face lift, especially when they are aiming to correct more than one issue on the neck and face.

Neck Lift

A neck lift will restore the contours of the face and neck and will improve the appearance of loose, sagging skin under your jaw line. A neck lift is best for patients who are dealing primarily with unwanted flabby skin under the chin and on the neck, often experienced by people who have experienced an extreme weight loss.

If extra fat, and not excess skin, is causing your double chin, then liposuction may be best for your situation. Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, is a popular cosmetic procedure that uses suction to reduce excess fat deposits between the skin and muscle. This technique works well on stubborn fat deposits despite a strict diet and active physical procedures. Liposuction is a surgical solution but offers minimal downtime and recovery.

5 Tips for Optimized Plastic Surgery Recovery

So, you had an expert plastic surgeon execute a successful procedure (which may or may not have been performed by an experienced specialist like Tup Ingram, MD) and now you’re entering the recovery phase.

In order to enjoy optimum results, it’s equally important that you and your surgeon nail the aftercare process.

The good news is that modern plastic surgery procedures are totally safe and more popular than ever. There are also minimally invasive procedures for those who need non-surgical alternatives.

However, cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery are still considered surgery, and some of them come with lengthy recovery times attached. Even the most simple procedures require some amount of recovery time.

But there are ways you can speed up your recovery process. Just like with any time you’re given in this life, what you do with your recovery time is what counts. If you’re able to follow some (or all) of these tips for your post-operative care, you’ll come out of your procedure in the best shape possible.

Read on for ways to recover more quickly from plastic surgery, that way you can get back to your normal life ASAP!

Follow All Instruction

It’s important to follow instructions for aftercare, whether you get them from Dr. Ingram or another plastic surgery specialist. You’ll be given a comprehensive packet of information regarding your specific procedure that will give you the path to a full and optimized recovery.

Take Plenty of Time off Work

Patients should always plan ahead and get the requisite amount of time off until suitable to engage in the demands of everyday employment. You don’t want to go back too early and compromise your results or re-injure yourself.

Gain a Support System

Have friends and family ready to pitch in. You’ll need someone to give you a ride to and from the procedure. You’ll also want someone to preferably wait on you and get you things and retrieve objects so that you aren’t tasked with doing it, initially. That way you can get the cooking and cleaning done that you need to stay comfortable.

Stay on Top of a Good Diet

Your body responds when you give it good, clean fuel to work with. A nutritious, calorie-rich diet will even help speed your recovery. Have ready-to-eat meals if that will make things easier.

Pamper Yourself a Little Bit

This might mean having tasty, post-surgery-friendly treats at the waiting, or even having your favorite movies or shows queued up to catch up on. Give yourself the love and care you need and you will have the best possible chances of making a fantastic recovery, so you can enjoy your lasting results.

Stay Away from Exercise

Make sure you relish in this one. Normally regular exercise is an important part of living a balanced life of health and wellness. But, when you’re recovering, it’s important that you don’t exert yourself or go through intense exercise, though it might be a difficult task if you’re heavily active normally. It’ll be worth it in the end and exercise isn’t going anywhere, it will be there for you when you’re physically ready.

Be on the lookout for more information about how to optimize your recovery and your wellness.

The 5 Most Popular Cosmetic Procedures for Women

The 5 Most Popular Cosmetic Procedures for Women

Over the years, cosmetic surgery has undergone transformations that make it easier to achieve amazing results. From implants to fat transfers, there are now numerous ways to slim down, firm up, and help you feel your best. With the right treatment plan, you can take years off your appearance and obtain a youthful glow. If you’ve been considering cosmetic surgery, we’ve highlighted five of the most popular procedures for women.

1. Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation is a procedure designed to restore or improve breast volume. Implants can help balance out a figure, boost confidence and restore lost volume to the chest area. There are many options available regarding size, shape, and fillers, all  which help create the silhouette you’ve always wanted. From saline to gummy, your results will not only increase cup size but look very natural.

Breast augmentation surgery is a major procedure that requires significant recovery time. Your doctor will discuss this with you in your consultation, as well as help you decide what shape and size is best for your body. Just remember to bring along some pictures.

2. Brazilian Butt Lift

A Brazilian Butt Lift is a cosmetic procedure that utilizes fat transfers from different areas of your body. This method uses your fat to create and enhance your backside, giving it a more natural look without the need for implants. The procedure uses liposuction to take fat from one area of the body and move it to another.

Liposuction is first performed on specific areas of the body, such as the lower back, stomach, and thighs. The fat is purified and then injected into various spots in the buttocks to obtain the desired shape and feel. With the Brazilian Butt Lift, the risk of infection is low since we’re utilizing your own fat. And because the procedure uses liposuction, it creates a more uniform, shapely and natural enhancement.

3. Tummy Tuck

Tummy tucks are also quite popular as they dramatically improve the stomach’s appearance by reducing excess fat, skin, and tissue. After pregnancy, you can even use this procedure to repair abdominal separation. There are two options available. A Mini Tummy Tuck focuses on the lower abdomen by tightening the muscles and reducing loose skin. This surgical procedure flattens the look of the belly, but with less invasive techniques than a standard tummy tuck. A standard Tummy Tuck focuses on a larger area of the torso. Your doctor can help you decide the best option. A Tummy Tuck requires cutting into the abdomen and is considered major surgery. There will be pre and post-op instructions to follow for the best results.

4. SlimLipo

SlimLipo™ is a form of liposuction that uses laser wavelengths to dissolve fat. Unlike traditional liposuction, there is no need for general anesthesia or extensive downtime, because the procedure is noninvasive. With a few tiny incisions, lasers gently “melt” fat for quick and permanent results. Since the lasers stimulate skin cells into producing collagen and elastin, you can also tighten up the skin.

Special note: SlimLipo™ and liposuction treatments aren’t a form of weight loss. The procedure is most beneficial for those who are within 20% of their ideal body weight.

5. Injections

Injections are the easiest way to smooth lines and combat wrinkles. There are quite a few options on the market providing women with the opportunity to tailor their treatment plan to their specific needs. There are two kinds of injections:

Botox® works by using Botulinum toxins, which are injected directly into the facial muscle to restrict muscle movement. Deeply etched lines in the face, often created by intense concentration or constant furrowing, will smooth out with regular use.

Fillers are made with hyaluronic acid which is injected into the face to smooth wrinkles. The filler itself has a gel-like consistency that is inserted into the skin to smooth fine lines. These particular fillers can last from 6 to 12 months before being absorbed.
