Tummy Tuck FAQs

Tummy tucks – also known as abdominoplasties – are one of the most common procedures performed by cosmetic surgeons. Tummy tucks have become more popular not only because of the dramatic results most patients show but also because of our focus on health and fitness. Recent advances in the operation offer better pain control and a smoother recovery. Here are a few of our patients’ most common questions about this operation.

“Do I need a full tummy tuck, or can I have a smaller scar – for example, with a “mini” tummy tuck or just liposuction?”

Every tummy tuck is slightly different, since everyone’s problem areas are different. Some patients have too much loose skin, some have lots of stretch marks, some have too much fat, and some people’s muscles been stretched or separated by pregnancy. People with tight skin can benefit from procedures which result in reduced scarring approach, such as liposuction, an endoscopic abdominoplasty, or a mini-abdominoplasty. If there is a lot of loose skin that needs tightening, you will require a longer scar. We always try to keep scars as short as possible, but what matters most is how your skin and waist look after surgery, since tummy tuck scars are hidden under shorts and a bathing suit.

Will a tummy tuck help my stretch marks?”

Absolutely. After pregnancy, most women’s stretch marks are below their belly buttons, and this is the skin that is removed in a tummy tuck. Unlike lasers and creams (which I don’t think I have ever seen help anyone at all, once they’re a year out from having their last baby), an abdominoplasty completely removes this skin, making your entire abdomen look like the much less damaged skin between your ribcage and your belly button – but even better, since even that undamaged skin is stretched and looks better than before!

“How much discomfort will I have after a tummy tuck?”

Years ago, tummy tucks were frequently performed in hospitals, and many patients could not stand straight up for a week or two. We perform all of our tummy tucks in one of our two outpatient surgery centers, so our patients are up and walking on the first night after surgery. Most patients need 3 or 4 days of a mild narcotic pain reliever and are back to their normal light activities about two days after they stop taking pain medicine. People who had had a prior C-section say that the discomfort is a 2-3 if the C-section pain was a 10.

“How long is the recovery after a tummy tuck?”

The answer to this question depends on what you mean by “recovery.” All our patients are walking around their homes on the first day after surgery. Most people are able to get out of the house for light exercise and shopping (but NO HEAVY LIFTING) on the third or fourth day after surgery. You can drive a car about a week after surgery, and you can start lower body aerobic exercise (a recumbent stationary bike is the best at this stage) at ten days after surgery. After that, it is up to you and how you feel, but you can’t lift anything heavier than 30 pounds until a month after surgery because we don’t want anything to mess up the muscle tightening you’ve gotten.

“Will the results last?”

Absolutely! As long as your weight remains fairly stable, abdominoplasties are usually a ‘one and done’ procedure, which does not need to be repeated. Of course, your skin will continue to age after surgery, but it almost never gets back to the looseness that you had before surgery.

“After pregnancy, my tummy needs help, but my breasts do, too. Can you work on both at the same time?”

Absolutely. Lots of patients have changes to both their abdomen and their breasts after childbirth and nursing. Combining abdominal and breast contouring after pregnancy is so common that it has a name – “mommy makeover.” Combining these procedures makes a lot of sense, because you save a little money on the operations and can combine your recovery times, making it easier to fit both operations into your hectic schedule.

What is Lipo 360?

Lipo 360 is an all-inclusive liposuction procedure that is used to contour and shape the midsection, 360 degrees around. The possible areas for treatment are the upper and lower abdominals, the flanks on both sides, and the lower and mid-back.

We utilized the best cosmetic surgery practices to develop a comprehensive range of liposuction procedures designed to lift, tone, and contour your body. What makes this procedure truly unique is the ability to give you the custom results that you want.

How Lipo 360 Works

First, you’ll meet with a patient care coordinator and one of our surgeons. They will listen to your needs and make recommendations based on how you’d like to shape and define your body.

Lipo 360 uses a vacuum to target and suction fat from specific areas in the midsection. Our surgeons use special techniques to accentuate your natural curves and create a dramatic yet natural-looking result. In some cases, the surgeon may also use a laser in addition to traditional liposuction to help melt fat and tighten the skin.

Another added benefit of Lipo 360 is that it does not require general anesthesia. Most patients require only IV sedation for this procedure.

The Recovery

Downtime for Lipo 360 is minimal and most patients can return to normal activities within just a few days. But with any surgical procedure, downtime can vary, and following post-op instructions is a must. Your doctor will provide you with specific guidelines to follow to ensure you get the best results and heal quickly. Be prepared to avoid strenuous activities and exercise following your procedure as your body will need time to heal.

The Right Candidate for Lipo 360

The ideal candidate for Lipo 360 will be within their ideal body weight and someone looking to remove fat from trouble areas that are not easily fixed by exercise alone. Lipo 360 works wonders because it targets both small and large areas of the body to contour and shape.

Getting the curves you’ve always wanted is possible with Lipo 360 and starts with a FREE consultation to meet with one of our doctors. At your consultation you will discuss the results you desire and have the opportunity to ask any questions.

How to Choose the Right Cosmetic Surgeon

How to Choose the Right Cosmetic Surgeon

Cosmetic surgery is a big decision. Once you’ve decided what procedure you want to have, it’s time to do your research on a cosmetic surgeon. Having all the information about the doctor and procedure before you enter surgery is crucial. Below, we’ve compiled a list to help you choose the best cosmetic surgeon.

Look for a Surgeon Who is Board Certified

A board-certified doctor means they have the experience in a particular field that sets them apart from the rest. It takes a lot to become board-certified. To comply, doctors must complete three to five years of training in general surgery and minimum of two to three years of training in plastic surgery. Additionally, they must take written and oral tests and undergo continuous education. Choosing a board-certified doctor confirms your doctor will be up-to-date with the latest techniques and procedures to give you the best results possible.

They Have Completed the Procedure You Want

Every cosmetic surgeon is going to have experience in various procedures, but often they also have a specialty. Completing a breast augmentation isn’t the same as a Brazilian Butt Lift. When you are looking for the right doctor, confirm they have experience doing the procedure you are most interested in and ask for before and after images to see the results.

There is Access to an Operating Facility

Your health and safety revolve around the conditions of the operating facility. Both the anesthetist and quality of the room contribute highly to your outcome, so make sure you ask plenty of questions about it. First, ask where they perform the surgery. Some have operating rooms onsite others work in conjunction with a hospital. Either way, the facility should be accredited. Accreditation means it has a life support system on the off-chance something happened. Look for AAAASF, AAAHC or JCAHO operating facility certification.

They Produce the Results You Want

We already mentioned before and after photos as a great way to ensure the surgeon has experience. But, you can use these photos to confirm they also have similar aesthetics to what you want to achieve. Cosmetic surgery produces permanent results, and you want to be happy with what you get. Take the time to look through previous images. Ideally, your cosmetic surgeon will also have testimonials online to get a better idea about who they are what service they offer.

You Feel a Connection with Your Doctor and Nurses

Depending on the surgery, you will spend a decent amount of time pre and post-op with your doctor and nurses. You will want to trust your surgeon and the staff to give you the care you need. A personal connection will help you feel comfortable in their care. That’s why consultations are significant. It’s the opportunity to speak and ask all the questions you need to about the procedure and to understand whether or not you will work well together.

Consultation Questions

It can be overwhelming when you step into your consultation. Preparation is critical, so we’ve put together a few questions you can ask:

1. How many years of experience do you have in the procedure I want?

2. Would you suggest an alternative?

3. What do I need to do before the treatment to get the best results?

4. What are the risks associated with this particular surgery?

5. What is the recovery period?

6. Do I need more than one procedure to get the results I want?

What to Look for When Choosing a Cosmetic Surgeon

Make Sure the Surgeon is Board-Certified

When a doctor is board-certified, you know that he is experienced in that particular field. In order to comply and become certified, doctors must complete three to five years of training in general surgery and a minimum of two to three years of training in plastic surgery—in addition to written and oral tests. Plus, board-certified surgeons must undergo continued education. This means you know your doctor will be up-to-date on all the advancements in current procedures and be able to advise you expertly.

You can find a list of certified surgeon by clicking here.

Operating Facility

Once you have confirmed that your doctor is board-certified, ask about their operating facilities. Your health and safety revolve around the anesthetist and quality of the operating room. You’ll want to ask your surgeon where they perform surgery and about the facility’s accreditation. Accredited operating rooms is having a life support system, in the off chance that something goes wrong. Look for AAAASF, AAAHC or JCAHO operating facility certification.

To learn more about the anesthetist’s qualifications, look for either a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) or a Board-Certified Anesthesiologist administering your anesthesia.

Experience in the Procedure You Want

Each cosmetic procedure requires a different skill set. As you can imagine, performing a facelift is completely different than performing a breast augmentation or reduction. When researching a doctor, make sure he or she has experience in the surgery you are looking for. Look at before and after photos and reviews of their practice.

Similar Aesthetics

Before and after photos are a good way to ensure your surgeon shares your aesthetic. These results will last the rest of your life, so you want to be sure you are getting something you are comfortable with. Take time to look through images of previous clients to be confident the results will match what you are looking for. For better comparison, look for others who have similar face, body, and age as you.

Personal Connection

You will spend a prolonged amount of time with your doctor and their team before, during, and after surgery. Trust is essential and your doctor should make you feel comfortable in their care. Having a good personal connection with your doctor helps. You should feel confident asking questions or voicing any concerns you may have. Their responses should make you feel comfortable and secure with the decision you are making.

Everything You Need to Know About Buttock Augmentation

Everything You Need to Know About Buttock Augmentation

Buttock augmentation is a highly popular procedure in the U.S. with an augmentation happening every 30 minutes, in 2015 alone. It’s one of the fastest growing surgeries of the last year and is still going strong in 2016. If you are considering a buttock augmentation and want to know more about your options, here is everything you need to know.

Augmentation Options

There are several popular options for when it comes to buttock augmentation. The most common choices among our patients are a fat transfer or butt implants. Butt lifts, most commonly known as Brazilian Butt Lifts, is a procedure that does not require implants but uses fat from other areas of your body. During this procedure, Dr. Jeffrey Marvel will transfer your body fat to lift the buttocks and create your desired shape. The other option is implants. Like with any implant procedure, it is a little more invasive since the muscle in the buttocks will have to be cut in order to insert the implant. Both options are safe, but Dr. Marvel will be able to advise you which option would suit your needs.

Expect Some Change in Shape

The results after having implants will be immediate, but if you choose to have fat transfers, it can take 6 – 12 months for the grafts to settle. Usually 60% – 80% of the fat survives after a transfer, but that percentage could change with weight fluctuation. If you gain weight that percentage will increase, however with weight loss you could lose a lot of volume in the buttocks. If you are currently trying to lose weight it may be advisable to wait until you’ve achieved your goal.

The Healing Time For Implants is Longer Than Fat Transfers

Since the implant procedure is more involved surgically than having fat transferred, recovery time from implants will take longer. Sitting will be almost nonexistent for up to 3 weeks since you won’t be able to put much if any pressure on the buttocks. You can sleep face down or on your side, but you’ll need to limit the amount you are on your back. This is both for placement and comfort. Exercise will be nonexistent for 6 – 8 weeks, as your body needs to recover from the surgery.
