Cosmetic Surgery Procedures To Consider This Winter!

Now that the seasons are changing, I’ve had lots of patients asking me: “What time of year is best for cosmetic surgery?” That’s an especially good question this year, because COVID has everyone’s holiday plans up in the air, and since everyone is wearing masks all the time.

The Winter is always a good time for any kind of surgery since it’s cooler, and you can wear baggy/bulky clothes to conceal your swelling and bruising. But some procedures are especially good to do in the winter.

This year, eyelid surgery is great any time of year. Everyone is wearing masks, so their eyes are all that most other people see.

Upper eyelid surgery is a quick procedure with very little downtime – Reagan at our Spring Hill office had hers done yesterday (Thursday) and has a full day scheduled next Tuesday. Since it’s cool outside, she’ll have less bruising and swelling than if she had her surgery in the summer, and she won’t miss any fun outdoor activities since the days are so short now. Chin implants, lip lifts (check out this excellent article – https://www.allure.com/story/lip-lift-plastic-surgery-procedure ), and facelifts are also great procedures to do now, because your mask will hide your swelling while you recuperate!

Any kind of body contouring surgery (liposuction, breast lift, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and BBL) is great to have during the Winter. First of all your recovery will be a little easier because of the cool weather and your ability to hide your swelling under sweats. Second, most people are a bit more sedentary in the Winter, so resting during your recovery is a little easier. Finally, and maybe most importantly, November through February are a great time to have breast augmentation, tummy tuck, liposuction, and BBL, since you’ll be totally recovered and ready to wear your swimsuit when the pools open in April!

What is Vaginal Rejuvenation?

As if aging didn’t give us enough to worry about with wrinkled, sagging skin, there’s yet one other area that’s affected as we advance in years: the vagina. Muscles become more relaxed as we age, which causes looseness and dryness.

Pregnancy and childbirth can further contribute to vaginal problems, including stretched tissues and bladder problems. When women approach menopause, estrogen levels drop, and this further exacerbates vaginal atrophy.

These problems can have profound effects on a woman’s quality of life. An irritated and dry vagina can impede sexual pleasure and intimacy. Overall discomfort can lead to chafing, and mild urinary incontinence can be inconvenient and embarrassing.

The good news is that help is available for women who are struggling with these vaginal issues.

Laser vaginal rejuvenation is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure, which revitalizes and reconditions the vagina by reconstructing damaged muscles and tissues of the vaginal cavity.

RejuVAnate is a novel, painless pulsed CO2 laser vaginal rejuvenation treatment to vaginal tissues delivered through a special hand piece in a procedure that takes less than 15 minutes. Downtime is minimal; patients must only have vaginal “rest” for the three days after the procedure.

How RejuVAnate Works

RejuVAnate works via pulses of laser energy into the collagen layer of the vaginal mucous membrane. Concentrated thermal heating leads to collagen and elastin “shrinkage” and secondary regeneration, producing a tightening of the vaginal tissues. These CO2 laser treatments are delivered in a series of three spaced four weeks apart.

The initial shrinkage and secondary regeneration produce improved pressure on the “G-Spot” and the clitoris. Tightening also occurs along the base of the overlying bladder, which improves minor urinary incontinence.

The result of the treatment is the complete remodeling of the vaginal mucosa, in addition to the re-establishment of robust, more “youthful” vaginal tissue embedded with thick and long collagen fibers. Patients report a noticeable tightening of the entire vaginal canal for increased friction and pleasure during sexual intimacy.

Vaginal rejuvenation helps:

  • Vulvovaginal Atrophy (painful intercourse, dryness, itching/irritation)
  • Vaginal laxity
  • Mild urinary incontinence or mild overactive bladder

Vaginal rejuvenation may be right for you if you have minimal to moderate vaginal looseness or laxity not severe enough to need a complete surgical repair but bothersome enough (less “grip,” too much “droop”) to diminish sexual pleasure and sometimes lead to modest urinary incontinence.

How to Prepare for Your Cosmetic Procedure

How to Prepare for Your Cosmetic Procedure

Many people are choosing cosmetic surgery because they wish to enhance, rejuvenate, or simply reshape their body. Today, technological advancements give surgeons the ability to provide clients with the most natural results.

But before you go under the knife, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide to help you prepare for your cosmetic procedure.

Confirm Your Doctor is Board Certified

After medical school, most doctors go on to specialize in one area of medicine. They work towards becoming a board-certified surgeon, which requires even more training, continued education, and the ability to pass a rigorous set of exams. Only choose a doctor with a board certification, so you know they will have the expertise to complete your procedure safely and with the best results possible.

Book a Consultation

Consultations are a must when preparing for surgery. In fact, it would be inadvisable to continue with a procedure without talking to your doctor first. The consultation gives you and the surgeon plenty of time to discuss your goals and create a treatment plan specific to you.

During this meeting, ask about your options, the final pricing, and any risks associated with the surgery. Ask about the recovery period, taking time off work, and avoiding strenuous activities like exercise.

This conversation will deepen your connection with your doctor, instill trust, and confirm you have made the appropriate choice for your surgery.

Preparing for Cosmetic Surgery

You’ll need to prepare for surgery at least three weeks before your appointment. Here are some of the best tips for getting your body ready.

Three Weeks Before

What you put in your body can impact the results and how well you recover from surgery. Three weeks out, stop smoking and drinking. Both weaken the immune system which will be working overtime to help you recover after your operation. Alcohol can make you susceptible to bleeding. You should stop consuming alcohol pre and post op until your surgeon has given you permission.

All prescription and over the counter medications need to be divulged to your doctor. If you are taking anything that could compromise your health during the procedure, you’ll need to stop taking them temporarily to prepare your body.

Two Weeks Before

Coming off your medications is often a gradual process. During week two, you will revisit all your medications with your surgeon and make necessary adjustments. Most notably will be the removal of blood thinners such as aspirin and ibuprofen and other medicines like anti-inflammatories or Vitamin-E.

During week two you start taking vitamin supplements that will boost your overall health. Vitamins A and C are great, plus Bromelain. It’s found in pineapples and works will to relieve swelling after surgery.

One Week Before

This week, you’ll need to focus on reducing the swelling. Surgery is hard on the body, and there is sure to be some swelling associated with the procedure. Did you know that too much salt increases sodium levels which can be uncomfortable after your procedure is complete? Continue improving your immune system by eating whole fruits, vegetables, and grains. If you will need prescription post-op, go ahead and get them filled before.

How to Choose the Right Cosmetic Surgeon

How to Choose the Right Cosmetic Surgeon

Cosmetic surgery is a big decision. Once you’ve decided what procedure you want to have, it’s time to do your research on a cosmetic surgeon. Having all the information about the doctor and procedure before you enter surgery is crucial. Below, we’ve compiled a list to help you choose the best cosmetic surgeon.

Look for a Surgeon Who is Board Certified

A board-certified doctor means they have the experience in a particular field that sets them apart from the rest. It takes a lot to become board-certified. To comply, doctors must complete three to five years of training in general surgery and minimum of two to three years of training in plastic surgery. Additionally, they must take written and oral tests and undergo continuous education. Choosing a board-certified doctor confirms your doctor will be up-to-date with the latest techniques and procedures to give you the best results possible.

They Have Completed the Procedure You Want

Every cosmetic surgeon is going to have experience in various procedures, but often they also have a specialty. Completing a breast augmentation isn’t the same as a Brazilian Butt Lift. When you are looking for the right doctor, confirm they have experience doing the procedure you are most interested in and ask for before and after images to see the results.

There is Access to an Operating Facility

Your health and safety revolve around the conditions of the operating facility. Both the anesthetist and quality of the room contribute highly to your outcome, so make sure you ask plenty of questions about it. First, ask where they perform the surgery. Some have operating rooms onsite others work in conjunction with a hospital. Either way, the facility should be accredited. Accreditation means it has a life support system on the off-chance something happened. Look for AAAASF, AAAHC or JCAHO operating facility certification.

They Produce the Results You Want

We already mentioned before and after photos as a great way to ensure the surgeon has experience. But, you can use these photos to confirm they also have similar aesthetics to what you want to achieve. Cosmetic surgery produces permanent results, and you want to be happy with what you get. Take the time to look through previous images. Ideally, your cosmetic surgeon will also have testimonials online to get a better idea about who they are what service they offer.

You Feel a Connection with Your Doctor and Nurses

Depending on the surgery, you will spend a decent amount of time pre and post-op with your doctor and nurses. You will want to trust your surgeon and the staff to give you the care you need. A personal connection will help you feel comfortable in their care. That’s why consultations are significant. It’s the opportunity to speak and ask all the questions you need to about the procedure and to understand whether or not you will work well together.

Consultation Questions

It can be overwhelming when you step into your consultation. Preparation is critical, so we’ve put together a few questions you can ask:

1. How many years of experience do you have in the procedure I want?

2. Would you suggest an alternative?

3. What do I need to do before the treatment to get the best results?

4. What are the risks associated with this particular surgery?

5. What is the recovery period?

6. Do I need more than one procedure to get the results I want?

Are You a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

Are You a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

The midsection is often ranked as the area that causes people the most insecurities. Sometimes a healthy diet and exercise simply doesn’t cut it, especially if the excess weight is a result of giving birth. Regardless of the reasons, tummy tucks are a great option to get the slimmer figure you want. If you’re interested in the procedure, read on to discover whether or not you are a good candidate.

Tummy Tuck Surgery

Before we can dive into candidacy, we should take a closer look at what the surgery entails. If you are considering a Tummy Tuck, it’s worth noting there are two different options available.

Mini vs. Traditional Tummy Tummy Tuck

A Mini Tummy Tuck focuses on the lower abdomen by tightening the muscles and reducing loose skin. This is a surgical procedure that flattens the look of the belly, but with less invasive techniques than a standard tummy tuck. A standard Tummy Tuck focuses on a larger area of the torso.

Regardless of which option you choose, the procedure itself is beneficial for those who are roughly within 20% of their ideal body weight. The results are permanent, but as with most procedures involving fat, any form of weight gain will alter the effects. It’s important to note that a tummy tuck shouldn’t be used as a method to lose weight. If unhealthy eating habits continue, the results of the tummy tuck will only be superficial.

Good Candidates for Tummy Tucks

A suitable candidate for a tummy tuck is someone who is currently within their ideal body weight. The procedure is successful at removing unwanted and stubborn fat and toning. It is not, however, a weight loss solution. Fat cells can reform any time your diet changes with increased calories.

If you are at your ideal body weight, but looking to move stubborn fat, a tummy tuck can work wonders. Because procedure gives you the ability to target localized areas, you can work in small and large regions of the body to give you a sleeker look. A suitable candidate will also have good skin elasticity.

Additionally, the best candidates for Tummy Tucks are non-smokers who are physically healthy and have realistic expectations of their results. To get a better idea of the results you can likely expect, we recommend taking the time to research a qualified surgeon and viewing before and after photos.

Tummy Tucks After Childbirth

Tummy tucks are safe for women who have had children. It is wise, however, for a woman to only choose a tummy tuck once she’s decided to no longer have children, as the effects of childbirth could alter the result of the original surgery.

Length of Procedure & Recovery

The length of the surgery will vary depending on the amount of work you wish to have done. Tummy tucks are a surgical procedure that requires the individual to undergo anesthesia and could take several weeks of recovery – as do most surgical procedures. That being said, it is wise to do your research to find a cosmetic surgeon that has the correct qualifications to achieve the results you want. We also recommend looking at before and after photos.

Announcing Phoenix 15 CO2 Laser Treatments

Announcing Phoenix 15 CO2 Laser Treatments

At Marvel Cosmetic Surgery, we achieve a quality of care and surgical results by incorporating the latest techniques and procedures in our practice. As advocates of minimally invasive procedures, we are proud to announce the addition of the Phoenix 15 CO2 Laser. Read on to discover the benefits.

Skin Resurfacing

What it does:

CO2 laser is the latest technology for skin resurfacing. It’s designed to help remove wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, and cheeks. The CO2 laser is also capable of reducing the appearance of sun spots and facial scars in 4 – 6 weeks.

The treatment:

The laser works by gently vaporizing the outer layer of sun-damaged or acne scarring to reveal smooth, fresh new skin underneath. In a similar manner, the laser works to phase out fine lines and wrinkles. The procedure gives your physician control over the application. Recovery time lasts about two weeks and works best for lighter skin tones.

Hand Rejuvenation

What it does:

There are now a variety of treatments available to achieve smooth, younger looking skin. Depending on your desired results, you may need only one or a combination of treatments. Three consecutive visits provide the best results.

The treatment:

Through a combination of chemical peels, Sclerotherapy, Microdermabrasion, tissue tightening and more, your physician can provide a combination to suit your needs. Laser treatments rapidly reduce the signs of aging with very little down time. A fat transfer provides a safe and effective way to restore volume and create a more youthful appearance. Recovery will depend on the exact procedures performed.

Feminine Rejuvenation

What it does:

Phoenix 15 CO2 Laser treatments are safe, minimally invasive procedures that provide tightening, strengthening, and smoothing. Ideal for women who have given birth, suffer from urge incontinence, or who have had breast cancer and can’t be on hormones. It can also help with unwanted secretions, increase blood flow, and sensitivity.

The treatment:

The procedure is a minimally invasive and designed to stimulate and promote the production of collagen. New skin cells will be produced in the underlying layer of tissue bringing about a smoother, tighter, and healthier skin. Before treatment, a pelvic exam should be performed, and the patient must have had a routine Pap Smear within the last six months. Achieving the best results happens with three treatments spread out over three months. The patient can return home the same day. Rest and abstaining from sex for about a week is needed.

Cosmetic Surgery After Extreme Weight Loss

Cosmetic Surgery After Extreme Weight Loss

Dramatic weight loss should be a rewarding experience. The long journey of hard work through diet, exercise, or bariatric surgery can be full of emotional highs and lows. The end goal is to feel healthy, happy, and full of vitality. So, if you have undergone a body transformation but are left with sagging skin, there are solutions to help tone and define the figure you worked so hard to achieve. Here is everything you need to know about plastic surgery after weight loss.

When to Consider Weight Loss Surgery

Sometimes, even though the goal weight has been reached, there are still areas of the body that need help, which diet and exercise can’t fix. Weight loss surgery is ideal for anyone who has excess skin on the stomach, arms, neck, and breast. There are various procedures available to help tighten and tone your body. A consultation with your doctor can help you determine the right treatment plan for you.

Am I the Right Candidate?

Diet and exercise need to be a lifestyle change, not a quick fix. Before you go under the knife, we recommend at least 6-12 months of stable eating and body maintenance before considering surgery. To get the most out of your procedure, you want to make sure your body weight has plateaued, and you don’t plan to lose or gain any more weight. This is important because sometimes problem areas can shift during the weight loss process. But, if you are maintaining stability, then you and your doctor can address your concerns to give you the optimal possible results.

Procedures to Consider

1. Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, reduces excess fat and skin from the waist, and in most cases, restores weakened or separated muscles. A tummy tuck is beneficial for smoothing and firming your abdominal profile. During your procedure, an incision is made from hip to hip. The entire abdominal wall lifts, and the underlying muscles tightened. The skin is then pulled down and re-draped to produce a flatter belly and more defined waist.

2.  Neck Lift

A neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that reduces excess skin from the jawline and neck. The neck lift begins with a small incision under the chin and the ear. Your doctor will then manipulate your muscles to create a tighter contour. Once this is achieved, excess skin is removed and the skin is re-draped. It’s important to note, neck lift patients are given a supportive garment to wear around the jaw for at least a week after surgery to keep the new contours in place.

3. Breast lift

If you have experienced loss of volume in the upper portion of your breasts due to weight loss, you might consider a breast lift, also known as mastopexy. The procedure is performed by making an incision in the breast to tighten the skin and raise the height of the nipple.  The surgical technique hides scarring around the nipple and on the bottom of the chest. The entire procedure lasts about two or three hours.

4. Liposuction

Liposuction is a popular cosmetic procedure that uses suction to remove excess fat deposits between the skin and muscle. This technique works well on stubborn fat deposits that don’t respond to a strict diet or targeted exercise. This is an option to consider if you want to remove stubborn body fat and create a slimmer profile.

What to Look for When Choosing a Cosmetic Surgeon

Make Sure the Surgeon is Board-Certified

When a doctor is board-certified, you know that he is experienced in that particular field. In order to comply and become certified, doctors must complete three to five years of training in general surgery and a minimum of two to three years of training in plastic surgery—in addition to written and oral tests. Plus, board-certified surgeons must undergo continued education. This means you know your doctor will be up-to-date on all the advancements in current procedures and be able to advise you expertly.

You can find a list of certified surgeon by clicking here.

Operating Facility

Once you have confirmed that your doctor is board-certified, ask about their operating facilities. Your health and safety revolve around the anesthetist and quality of the operating room. You’ll want to ask your surgeon where they perform surgery and about the facility’s accreditation. Accredited operating rooms is having a life support system, in the off chance that something goes wrong. Look for AAAASF, AAAHC or JCAHO operating facility certification.

To learn more about the anesthetist’s qualifications, look for either a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) or a Board-Certified Anesthesiologist administering your anesthesia.

Experience in the Procedure You Want

Each cosmetic procedure requires a different skill set. As you can imagine, performing a facelift is completely different than performing a breast augmentation or reduction. When researching a doctor, make sure he or she has experience in the surgery you are looking for. Look at before and after photos and reviews of their practice.

Similar Aesthetics

Before and after photos are a good way to ensure your surgeon shares your aesthetic. These results will last the rest of your life, so you want to be sure you are getting something you are comfortable with. Take time to look through images of previous clients to be confident the results will match what you are looking for. For better comparison, look for others who have similar face, body, and age as you.

Personal Connection

You will spend a prolonged amount of time with your doctor and their team before, during, and after surgery. Trust is essential and your doctor should make you feel comfortable in their care. Having a good personal connection with your doctor helps. You should feel confident asking questions or voicing any concerns you may have. Their responses should make you feel comfortable and secure with the decision you are making.

Liposuction – What You Need to Know

Liposuction – What You Need to Know

Sometimes all the diet and exercise in the world can’t reduces stubborn fat. For some individuals, it comes down to genetics. Fat deposits in the abdomen and thighs are particularly hard to move, leaving you with a less than ideal look. If this is something you identify with, liposuction might be a good option for you. As with any surgery, it’s always important to know what lies ahead. Here’s what you need to know about liposuction.

The suitable candidate

A suitable candidate for liposuction is someone who is currently within their ideal body weight. The procedure is successful at removing unwanted and stubborn fat. It is not, however, a weight loss solution. Fat cells can reform any time your diet changes with increased calories.

If you are at your ideal body weight, but looking to move stubborn fat, liposuction can work wonders. Because liposuction gives you the ability to target localized areas, you can work in small and large regions of the body to give you a sleeker look. A suitable candidate will also have good skin elasticity. Liposuction will remove excess fat, but it doesn’t tighten skin. Appropriate skin elasticity is beneficial in the recovery process.

The procedure

At the time of the consultation, you will review and discuss treatment options and map out the procedure. Your doctor should ask questions about your expectations and the desired look. Being specific will help tailor the treatment so you receive a customized plan that works for you.

The procedure is done under general anesthesia with the patient asleep or under local anesthesia where the patient remains awake. Medication is administered before the surgery to help you relax. The procedure can last from thirty minutes to several hours, depending upon the amount of fat removed.

Your doctor will inject a large amount of diluted local anesthetic solution into the area to reduce pain and bruising. A small incision is made in the skin and a tube attached to either a high-pressure vacuum suction or to a syringe system is inserted. The fat is loosened from surrounding tissue by moving the vacuum back and forth inside the body. The procedure is complete once the desired look is achieved.

The recovery process

Since this surgery does not involve large incisions and extensive cutting, pain is minimal to moderate. Oral medication is prescribed to help with any mild discomfort. Most individuals can move around immediately following surgery, but rest is recommended for the initial postoperative period. Normal activities can return within a week, although vigorous physical exercise is prohibited for several weeks.

Some swelling and discoloration can occur but usually, disappears within a month. Scars from liposuction, which fade significantly with time, are, for the most part, inconspicuous. Whenever possible these incisions are made within the natural creases of the body.

It is important to remember that liposuction surgery, while not a cure for generalized obesity, is an excellent procedure that can benefit those who want to remove unsightly fat from localized areas. However, patients who choose this cosmetic surgery procedure must have realistic expectations about the outcome and understand that final results may not be apparent for up to one year.

If you are interested in liposuction and would like to learn more, call 615-329-3900 to book your consultation today!

Cosmetic Procedures for Men

Cosmetic Surgery for Men

It can be disappointing to look in the mirror and see someone older than we feel. The effects of age, stress, and the environment can make us look older than we actually are. These factors don’t just apply to women, men suffer too. Although it might seem cosmetic surgery is strictly a woman’s domain, the number of men opting for cosmetic procedures is on the rise. Here we have listed some of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures for men and what they can do to help reverse the signs of aging.

Eyes

A combination of genetics and exposure to the sun can leave your eyes tired and sagging. With eyelid surgery, you can achieve a more youthful appearance. The process reduces excess skin and fat from around the eyes to brighten your look.

If you suffer from under-eye bags or hollows, injections or fillers might be a good option. This process is fairly easy and painless but will require some maintenance.

Nose

Rhinoplasty can help reshape your nose for structural or aesthetic purposes. In most cases, the size of the nose can throw off the balance of the whole face. Rhinoplasty addresses many cosmetic issues such as shape and size to create a harmonious balance. This is a surgery that requires anesthesia so the doctor can make small incisions inside the nose and sculpt to the appropriate shape.

Chest

If you suffer from excess skin and fat in the chest, breast reduction surgery could help. It’s quite common for skin to lose its elasticity over time. With excess fat, the tissue can become saggy and may lead to a feminizing appearance of the chest. With breast reduction surgery, the excess skin is removed and tightened.

Face

Sagging skin around the neck can be uncomfortable and can also create an illusion of being heavier than you actually are. If this is an area of concern, a facelift might be the right procedure for you. Facelifts reduce excess skin and fat to give you a firmer, more defined jawline.  The amount of improvement varies from patient to patient but is usually completed in one session. Pain and scarring is minimal with little recovery time after.

Stomach

If your efforts at the gym aren’t yielding the results you desire, liposuction or a tummy tuck may be the option for you. Liposuction uses a small vacuum to remove excess fat from your body. This is ideal for those who have difficulty with small trouble spots and should not be confused as a weight loss method.

If you are looking to remove excess fat and skin from the waistline, then a tummy tuck is an ideal solution. This procedure is more in depth and requires more shaping and sculpting, giving you a smaller, more defined waist.

The results for both have permanent results as long as proper weight management is maintained after your procedure.
