Five Most Common Cosmetic Surgery Procedures for Men

Even though cosmetic surgery is generally marketed to women, more men today are opting for procedures that will give them a more youthful and powerful appearance.

Cosmetic surgery is no longer just for females, as men underwent more than 85,000 procedures in 2018, according to a recent report from The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).

The ASAPS identified these five most common cosmetic surgery procedures for men last year:

  1. Liposuction
  2. Breast reduction (treatment of gynecomastia)
  3. Eyelid surgery
  4. Nose surgery (rhinoplasty)
  5. Tummy Tuck

As men request cosmetic procedures, they are becoming more tailored to address men’s specific concerns. While many of the procedures are similar to those traditionally performed for women, there are subtle but significant surgical variations, which ultimately produce the most appropriate results in cosmetic surgery for a man.

Let’s look more closely at the top five cosmetic surgery procedures for men.

Liposuction

Liposuction tops the list as the most common cosmetic procedure American men chose in 2018. Also known as lipoplasty, liposuction uses suction to reduce excess fat deposits between the skin and muscle.

Men with love handles or “beer bellies” that won’t disappear, despite spending hours at the gym, find that liposuction can get rid of the stubborn fat, giving them a leaner, trimmer appearance.

Breast Reduction(treatment of gynecomastia)

Gynecomastia is a condition characterized by enlarged breasts due to an overgrowth of tissue. Male breast reduction surgery is a cosmetic surgery procedure that reduces excess glandular tissue and fat to restore a flatter, firmer and more masculine contour to the chest.

Often called “man boobs,” gynecomastia is estimated to affect between 40 to 60 percent of men. Certain drugs, medical problems, and genetics can contribute to male breast enlargement, but there is no confirmed cause in the majority of cases.

For some men losing weight can help reduce the appearance of enlarged breasts.  Frequently there is excess glandular tissue as well even for the most slender male patients.

Male breast reduction surgery is an effective, long lasting treatment that reduces the excess tissue, restoring a more masculine and natural contour to the chest.

Eyelid Surgery

Wrinkles and deep lines, as well as puffiness on the lids, begin to develop with the passage of time. Aged, droopy eyelids can cause men to look old, tired, or angry, produce anxiety, and actually impair vision. Eyelid surgery solves that by removing excess skin and fat on upper and lower eyelids. It is often done in conjunction with other surgical procedures, including a facelift, eyebrow lift, and forehead lift.

Nose Surgery

Rhinoplasty reshapes the nose to improve its size, shape, or function.

Tummy Tuck

A Tummy Tuck, or abdominoplasty, reduces excess abdominal skin and tightens the abdominal muscles. Men have a smoother and firmer profile after a Tummy Tuck.

Many men also request Facelifts and Neck Lifts in our office, even though they didn’t make the top five list from the ASAPS. Both of these procedures rejuvenate the face, jawline, and neck by restoring sagging skin and other tissues. These help improve signs of aging and result in a younger appearance.

Liposuction vs Tummy Tuck – How to Choose

Liposuction vs Tummy Tuck - How to Choose

Bikini season is just around the corner. And if you’re considering a procedure to remove stubborn fat, there are several great options to consider. Two of the most popular procedures to remove stubborn fat and tackle trouble areas are liposuction and a tummy tuck.

So what’s the difference between these two procedures and how do you choose what’s right for you? Let’s break it down and take a look!

Liposuction

Liposuction in its most basic form, is a popular cosmetic surgery that is performed by using suction to break down and suction out the excess fat deposits from the body

As one of the most sought out cosmetic surgery procedures in the world, liposuction isn’t considered a major operation. In fact, it is considered a very minor invasive procedure and is generally an outpatient type of surgery. Some patients may be under general anesthesia but most only require IV sedation and are allowed to go home the same day as the surgery.

Here are some of the most common “target” areas where traditional liposuction is performed:

  • Abdomen and Waist
  • Back
  • Calves and Ankles
  • Chest Area
  • Hips and buttocks
  • Inner knee
  • Thighs
  • Upper arm

Here at Marvel Cosmetic Surgery, we also offer an all-inclusive liposuction procedure called Lipo360, to contour and shape the midsection, 360 degrees around. The possible areas for treatment are the upper and lower abdominals, the flanks on both sides, and the lower and mid-back.

This procedure uses a vacuum to target and suction fat from specific areas in the midsection. Our surgeons use special techniques to accentuate the patient’s natural curves and create a dramatic yet natural-looking result.

However, bear in mind, Liposuction is not a weight management program nor a solution for treating obesity.

Ideal patients are those who have a good bill of health, are close or near their goal weight (BMI), nonsmokers, have great skin elasticity and have no blood flow/circulation issues. You should consider getting a liposuction if you have areas of fat deposits that are disproportionate to the rest of your body. Patients who still have a significant amount of weight to lose are not good candidates for liposuction.

If you are aiming for a sleeker contour and want more definition in certain areas of the body then liposuction is a great option for you.

Tummy Tuck

A flat and well-toned abdomen is what many of us strive for through exercise and weight control. Sometimes though, these methods cannot guarantee results.

Abdominoplasty or more commonly known as “tummy tuck” is a cosmetic surgery procedure where excess skin and fat from the waist, middle and lower abdomen is removed. This also involves tightening the abdominal muscles which leads to a smaller bulge in the stomach and abdominal area.

The procedure itself is done through a hip-to-hip cut or an incision at the bikini line. The skin and fat is then lifted off the abdominal wall where any excess skin is pulled down and removed. Any stretch marks as a result of childbearing or obesity is repaired through the stitching. This results in the tightening of the underlying muscles in the abdominal wall, which leads to a flatter stomach.

As this is a more invasive procedure compared to liposuction, recovery times tend to be longer. A patient will need at least 2 to 4 weeks for the body to recover, while scars and swelling may take a couple of months to heal.

In summary, if you’re looking to just sculpt or shape certain “target” areas in your body, then liposuction is the way to go. If your problem is excess skin due to weight loss or child birth, then tummy tuck might be a better fit.

Keep in mind that while these are separate procedures, it is possible to have both of these done to get the optimal results for the ideal body shape you want.

With summer just around the corner, we at Marvel Cosmetic are here to help you achieve your ideal shape. Curious to learn more and decide which procedure is right for you? Is a Brazilian Butt Lift Safe?

Is a Brazilian Butt Lift Safe?

Tired of spending hours in the gym doing squats and still not getting the results you want? You may be a good candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift. A Brazilian Butt Lift is a great option for those who are looking to not only shape their bottom, but also trim the waistline. This procedure uses your own body fat to enhance your shape and give you the curves you’ve always wanted.

What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

The Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) is a cosmetic procedure that uses fat from your own body to shape your backside and enhance your curves. Using your own body fat will give the most natural looking and incredible results.

Some butt lifts require implants, but this isn’t the case with the BBL. With BBL, the surgeon can remove fat from the abdomen, back, stomach, or thighs. The removed fat is then purified before it is injected into the buttocks to create a rounder, shapely contour. Having various injection points gives the doctor the ability to control the contouring and final shape.

How safe is BBL?

In general, BBL is a very safe procedure. But as with any other major cosmetic procedure, do your research and make sure you choose a surgeon who is very experienced in performing Brazilian Butt Lifts.

Another benefit of BBL is that it involves Fat Transfer (also known as fat grafting) to move excess fat from one part of the body to another. This type of procedure significantly lowers your risk of infection. Infection can sometimes take place if the body rejects unwanted or foreign substances. However, in a BBL procedure you’re using your own fat cells, which your body is more likely to accept.

Using your own fat will also give you a more natural curve and feel. Patients often wonder if the results are as long lasting compared to using implants. And, the answer is yes. Having a BBL offers powerful and immediate results

The Right Candidate for a BBL

Anyone who is not seeing the firm, round shape they would like to achieve from workouts alone, a BBL is a great solution. This procedure will give you the firm, round shape you desire. Those with stretch marks, cellulite, and loose, hanging skin, also benefit from this type of procedure as it provides an opportunity to tighten and tone.

The Recovery

There are at least a few weeks of recovery for anyone who undergoes a BBL.  Expect some bruising and swelling immediately following the procedure in the buttocks and where the fat cells were harvested. Your doctor will prescribe medication to help alleviate any pain. Some patients might notice fluid draining from the incision, which is perfectly normal. You’ll just need to keep an eye on it and alert your doctor if there is anything unique or different about the fluid change.

A critical component to the success of a BBL is not sitting on your buttocks for a few weeks. Sitting on your bottom immediately after your procedure will reduce the flow of circulation, which may stunt your results.

Following your doctor’s after care instructions is an absolute must.

Is BBL right for you?

The first step towards a defined backside starts with a consultation. Our consultations are completely free of charge and give you the opportunity to speak directly with one of our doctors about the results you’re looking for.

Ready to see if BBL is right for you? Give us a call today at 615-861-8174 to book your FREE consultation.

How to Maintain Your Curves After a Liposuction Treatment

How To Maintain Your Curves After a Liposuction Treatment

If you’re struggling with stubborn or unwanted fat, liposuction can be a great solution! There are a variety of procedures that can be tailored to fit your needs and help you reach your goals.

Before making the decision to try liposuction, many people worry and wonder if they will lose their natural curves following the procedure. Thankfully, this is extremely rare! Most people are more than able to maintain their curves following their surgery. In fact, many people get the curves they have always wanted, in all the right places, following their procedure.

Liposuction is a procedure that is catered towards each individual person’s body. Initially, a surgeon will meet with you to discuss your needs and wants. Since liposuction is a “sculpting” procedure, both precision of the surgeon and the meticulousness of the technique help create the patient’s ideal body.

No matter what procedure you choose, maintaining a healthy lifestyle following the surgery is the best way to ensure that your results are lasting.

Exercising, eating well, drinking water, and reducing your stress levels are some of the best ways to keep your post-op body.

Exercise has a myriad of benefits that go far beyond helping to maintain your surgery results. Staying active improves your overall health and has been linked to wellness benefits too, like reduced depression and anxiety.

Liposuction works to smooth out bulging areas of our bodies. The best way to keep your results is to stick to a diet low in fat, sugar, and processed food. Fruits, vegetables, protein-rich foods, and foods that are low in fat are the best choices for any person’s health, whether they have completed liposuction or not.

Increasing the amount of water that you drink also provides a variety of benefits. When it comes to weight loss surgery specifically, increased water consumption helps keep your weight stable and can even help you lose more weight. Drinking water before meals helps you feel fuller longer and can cut down on overeating. Choosing water over other caloric drinks is a great way to keep weight off.

Although it may seem counterintuitive, stress is one of the biggest causes of weight gain. When we are stressed or overwhelmed, our body raises the levels of cortisol in our system. These increased cortisol levels can lead to cravings, meaning we eat more than we need and also foods that are unhealthy for us. Reducing stress is different for every person, but most everyone can benefit from a consistent, predictable routine and a more positive outlook. Yoga, meditation, baths, and practicing gratitude are a few other ways that many people reduce stress.

If you’re ready to customize your curves, contact Marvel Cosmetic at 615-538-0399 for your free consultation today!

Is it Time for a Tummy Tuck?

Is it Time for a Tummy Tuck?

Achieving a slimmer and leaner silhouette is a goal for many individuals. However, some may find that all the diet and exercise doesn’t move the unwanted and stubborn belly fat. Fortunately, there are procedures available like the tummy tuck that can help improve the contours of the abdomen. If you are considering a tummy tuck, read on to find out if it’s right for you.

The Procedure and Recovery

There are two different tummy tucks available: a mini and traditional tummy tuck. The mini tummy tuck focuses on the lower abdomen, tightening the muscles and reducing loose skin with less invasive techniques than a standard tummy tuck. The traditional version focuses on larger areas of the stomach.

The length of the surgery will vary depending on the amount of work you wish to have done. Tummy tucks are a surgical procedure that requires the individual to undergo anesthesia and could take several weeks of recovery – as do most surgical procedures. That being said, it is wise to do your research to find a cosmetic surgeon that has the correct qualifications to achieve the results you want. We also recommend looking at before and after photos.

How to Know You’re Ready for a Tummy Tuck

You Have Extra Skin or Fat in the Abdomen

Taking part in a tummy tuck and be life-changing. For many individuals, regular exercise and a healthy diet aren’t enough to move unwanted and stubborn belly fat. A tummy tuck provides patients with a chance to eliminate excess fat and tighten loose skin. The best candidates will have surplus skin in the abdomen. The procedure requires a sizable incision. Without enough skin, tension can be put on the scar causing stretch marks. The results of the procedure offer a slimmer profile. It should be noted that tummy tucks are not capable of producing toned abdominal muscles. The process is provided as a chance to improve the silhouette.

You’ve Recently Had a Baby

Having a baby not only changes your life but your body. Many women experience stretched skin and abdominal separation after having children. Pregnancy puts pressure on the stomach and as a result, causes muscles to separate to allow further expansion. Even after the loss of the baby-weight, many women experience permanent damage to the muscles and finds their skin hangs around their stomach. Left untreated, individuals might experience lower back pain, constipation, and urine leaking. Tummy tucks have the ability to repair this damaged tissue and restore muscles to give a flatter and leaner appearance.

You’re Not Planning to Have More Children

While tummy tucks can help reduce the signs of pregnancy, it should be avoided until you’ve decided you are done having children. A tummy tuck is a permanent solution to excess skin and abdominal separation, but it can’t prevent it from happening during the next pregnancy. If you experienced these symptoms the first time you gave birth, it’s more than likely it will happen during future pregnancies which will undo all of the efforts set forth by your surgeon. To get the most out of the tummy tuck, you’ll need to wait until you are done having children.

You’re at Your Ideal Body Weight

There are a few things tummy tucks can and can’t do for the body. They can provide individuals with a slimmer look, but it’s not a replacement for a healthy diet and lifestyle. Fat cells will reproduce, and if you’re not making healthy choices, it’s possible all the hard work will go to waste over time. The best candidate for a tummy tuck will already be within their ideal weight range but looking for a way to remove stubborn belly fat. All bodies are different, and some people tend to carry their weight in the abdomen. After trying diet and exercise, if the fat isn’t budging a tummy tuck is an excellent solution.

SlimLipo™ vs. CoolSculpting: What’s the Difference?

SlimLipo™ vs. CoolSculpting: What's the Difference?

Even those who follow a strict diet and exercise regularly will find certain areas of the body hard to trim or tone. Thighs, stomach, buttocks, and underarms are common problem areas for many individuals. If consistent efforts through a healthy lifestyle are unable to reduce fat deposits in this area, you can consider liposuction methods. Fortunately, with the advancements in technology, there procedures available that are minimal to non-invasive. If you are considering surgery, here is everything you need to know about the revolutionary SlimLipo™ and CoolSculpting procedures.

Technology

SlimLipo™

SlimLipo™ is a new laser liposuction technique that uses laser wavelengths, to dissolve fat. With a few tiny incisions, this laser gently “melts” fat for quick and permanent results. The fat is liquefied and removed from the body through micro-cannulas. Additionally, the technology from SlimLipo™ can tighten and smooth skin during the treatment process.

CoolSculpting

Technically speaking, CoolSculpting is the exact opposite of SlimLipo™ because it freezes fat off rather than using the heat from lasers. The technology uses controlled cooling to target fat cells in the body. After the cells are frozen, they begin to die off allowing the body to absorb them naturally and eliminate them without the use of additional tools. The tools used are safe and won’t allow the temperature to become uncomfortable.

Process

SlimLipo™

SlimLipo™ is a minimally invasive procedure that requires tiny incisions in the skin. Because the stiches are small, they won’t need stitches post-op resulting in unnoticeable scarring. A local anesthetic is applied to the area where the SlimLipo™ will be performed. The laser uses two different wavelengths with one targeting unwanted fat cells and the other stimulating collagen growth to tighten the skin. The procedure takes only a few hours, and clients can go home the same day.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure. There is no need for any type incision or the need of anesthesia. The process begins by simply placing the applicator on the targeted area where it does all the work. From there, you can rest and relax while the fat cells are frozen off your body. Many clients experience a mild cold sensation and tightening of the skin in the first few minutes of treatment. After the process is complete, you receive a brief massage to encourage blood flow and warm up the area.

Recovery

SlimLipo™

There is very little downtime associated with the SlimLipo™ procedure. Every client is different, but many individuals can return to work the same day. Because of the laser application, it’s not uncommon for the area to be a little sore. Not enough, however, to interfere with daily activities or require special medications. Post-op, your surgeon, will provide you with compression bandages that you will wear. There will be some initial swelling, but after it subsides, you will begin to see the results. It will take at least a full six months to see a complete transformation.

CoolSculpting

The benefit of CoolScultping is there is no downtime. The procedure is non-invasive which means there is nothing to recover from. The results are permanent, and there is rarely any side-effects, but some clients feel itching, numbness, redness, swelling, or tenderness in the area. Your results begin to show within three weeks, but the process is gradual. The cells will continue to die for another four to six months after the process is completed.

It is important to remember that any form of liposuction surgery is not a cure for generalized obesity. It is a procedure that can benefit those who want to remove unsightly fat from localized areas. Patients who choose this procedure, however, must have realistic expectations about the outcome and understand that final results may not be apparent for up to one year.

To find out which process is right for you, call Marvel Cosmetic Surgery today at 615-329-3900 to book your consultation!

Maintaining Your Results After Liposuction

Maintaining Your Results After Liposuction

Liposuction is an excellent way to reduce stubborn fat. With many advancements in technology, there now are many ways to achieve fantastic results! But fat cells are something the body continues to produce, so if you don’t maintain a healthy lifestyle after liposuction, you could sabotage your results. Fortunately, there are some easy ways to maintain your new figure! Read on to learn more about ways to maintain your liposuction results.

Eat Healthy Carbs

There is too much material floating around shaming carbohydrates. Yes, excessive intake of pasta, bread, and sweet cakes aren’t good for your health, but that doesn’t mean skipping out on carbs altogether. What your body needs is a balance of healthy carbs to give you energy. Focus on nutrient-dense foods that are high in fiber. Slow releasing, they keep you satisfied longer helping to reduce the desire to snack on unhealthy foods because they are convenient. If you are looking for ways to add healthy carbs to your diet, you can start by swapping white pasta and bread for whole grain. Barely, peas, acorn squash, and beans are fantastic options for adding healthy carbs into your meals.

Exercise Often

Admittedly, we too wish there was a way around it, but there isn’t. If you want to maintain your new figure, you’re going to have to exercise. You don’t need to take up marathon training or lifting heavy weights if that’s not what you’re in to, but finding a way to increase your heart rate for at least thirty minutes a day is optimal to maintain your results. Your exercise could be in the form of walking outside or on a treadmill, running, yoga, dancing, or CrossFit. Ideally, you’ll want to pick something that interests you because it’s something you because you are ultimately looking for a lifestyle change rather than a quick fix!

Increase Water Intake

Water consumption is incredibly beneficial for the body and for keeping your lipo results! By drinking several glasses a day, you are providing your body with the necessary tools to flush out toxins. If too many toxins start to store, you are looking at an increase in fat cell production. Water is also an excellent and organic way to satiate hunger. We aren’t trying to say skip meals, but we often confuse hunger pains for thirst and omit drinking liquids altogether. Ideally, if you are beginning to feel “hungry” but you know you’ve had a good sized meal within the last one to two hours, try drinking water to see if it relieves the symptoms before indulging in a snack.

Don’t Skip Meals

Speaking of not skipping meals, eating is critical to keep your liposuction results long after you’ve had your procedure. When you don’t eat breakfast, skip lunch, or go to bed without dinner, you are putting your body under unnecessary stress. The first thing that happens is your blood sugar takes a dive. The organic and natural sugars found in fruits and veggies are precisely what the body needs for energy. By removing these options from your diet, your metabolism starts to slow down because your primal brain thinks you are going through a famine and will store fat for survival. The first place the body will store fat is around the midsection to protect vital organs, and if you’ve recently had liposuction, it’s more than likely this is the area where you had it removed.

If you are ready to see how liposuction can give you the curves you’ve always wanted, call us at 615-329-3900 or contact us to book your consultation today!

Top 5 Reasons to Consider SlimLipo™

Top 5 Reasons to Consider SlimLipo™

Dreaming of the perfect bikini body, but can’t seem to achieve the results you want? You’re not alone. Many people struggle with weight loss and have tried almost everything to achieve a slim, toned figure. If you are experiencing difficulty obtaining the sleek shape you want, SlimLipo™ might be the right option for you.

1. Targets Stubborn Areas

Even though you can exercise all areas of the body, some take longer to see results.  One of the benefits of SlimLipo™ is that it targets stubborn fat. The thighs, arms, and back are the most common areas for SlimLipo™. However, you can use this procedure to improve almost any area or to create the curves you want.

2. Tighten Skin

SlimLipo™ is a procedure that uses lasers to “melt” away fat. Like other laser treatments, the improvements are multifaceted. Since the lasers stimulate skin cells into producing collagen and elastin, you can also tighten up the skin, so you don’t have sagging or wrinkles.

3.  Minimize Cellulite

SlimLipo’s™ lasers are used both internally and externally. The laser works by helping with superficial problems, like cellulite. This process contributes by tightening skin and smoothing out areas that lack collagen.

4. Smaller Incisions

As a liposuction technique that uses wavelengths to dissolve fat, tiny incisions are made to help “melt” away fat. Smaller incisions mean your doctor can hide scarring. The smaller incision means less time for recovery.

5. Rejuvenates skin

Laser treatments rapidly reduce the signs of aging with very little down time. The laser works by gently vaporizing the outer layer of sun-damaged or acne scarring to reveal smooth, fresh new skin. Similarly, the laser works to phase out fine lines and wrinkles.

Cosmetic Procedures for Men

Best Cosmetic Procedures for Men

No one wants to accept how aging affects our appearance. It’s disappointing to look in the mirror and see someone who looks older than we actually are or feel. These insecurities don’t just apply to women; men also suffer. The number of men opting for cosmetic procedures is rising. In honor of Men’s National Health Month, here are cosmetic procedures we recommend for men.

Chest

If you suffer from excess skin and fat in the chest, breast reduction surgery could help. It’s quite common for skin to lose its elasticity over time. With excess fat, the tissue can become saggy and may lead to a feminizing appearance of the chest. With breast reduction surgery, the excess skin is removed and tightened. The procedure is not only permanent but can have you back to work in no time.

Stomach

If your efforts at the gym aren’t yielding the results you desire, liposuction or a tummy tuck may be an option for you. Liposuction or SlimLipo targets excess fat in the body and reduces it from hard to reach places, even delicate areas such as around the arm or thighs.

If you are looking to remove larger areas of fat and skin from the waistline, a tummy tuck is a possible solution. This procedure is more in depth and requires more shaping and sculpting, giving you a smaller, more defined waist. It is usually completed in conjunction with some form of liposuction.

*Note: This procedure is ideal for those who have difficulty with trouble spots and should not be considered a weight loss method.

Nose

Rhinoplasty can help reshape your nose for structural or aesthetic purposes. In most cases, the size of the nose can throw off the balance of the whole face. A nose job addresses many cosmetic issues, such as shape and size, to create a harmonious balance. This surgery requires anesthesia, then the doctor will make small incisions inside the nose and sculpt to the appropriate shape. In most cases, the patient’s recovery time is very short, and the results are permanent.

Eyes

A combination of genetics and exposure to the sun can leave your eyes looking tired and makes the skin start to sag. With eyelid surgery, you can quickly achieve a more rejuvenated appearance. This procedure removes excess skin and fat from around the eyes, which will brighten your appearance. The best news is the results are permanent.

If you suffer from under-eye bags or hollows, injections or fillers might be a good option. This process is pretty easy and relatively painless but will require some maintenance.

Face

Sagging skin around the neck can be uncomfortable and can also create an illusion of being heavier than you actually are. If this is an area of concern, a facelift might be the right procedure for you. Facelifts reduces excess skin and fat to give you a firmer, more defined jawline. This process can add years to your appearance and boost confidence. The amount of improvement varies from patient to patient but usually only needs one session to complete. Pain and scarring are minimal with little recovery time after.
