Skincare Tips for Winter

Skincare MCS

Winter weather is undoubtedly harsher on our skin than warmer seasons, yet many people don’t think to switch up their skincare routine. Cold air, low humidity, and blistering winds each create uncomfortably dry skin or skin that is itchy, red, and irritated. During colder seasons, our skin needs much more help to stay hydrated.

This winter, combat dry winter skin with a few simple skincare tips. After all, retaining your skin’s natural moisture means maintaining your youthful glow all year long.

Water

Many people don’t drink enough water throughout the day, and when it’s cold outside, it’s much easier to forget this step. Since weather with low humidity is most likely to strip skin of moisture, staying hydrated is vital. Sipping water slowly throughout the day rather than gulping it all at once will help the skin stay hydrated. If cold water isn’t doing it for you, drinking tea is also a great way to keep hydrated. Sip on warm teas with natural ginger or lemon.

Cleanse

You may need to switch your summer cleanser for a more effective winter one. In the winter, cleansers with harsh chemicals will feel much more damaging than nourishing. Avoid products with alcohol and added fragrances, as they can strip away natural oils and create dry, cracked skin. Look for products specifically labeled “fragrance-free,” because products simply marked “unscented” may actually contain some fragrance. Instead, choose a cream-based cleanser that will help lock moisture in.

Exfoliate

When winter weather creates dry, itchy skin, exfoliating is probably the last thing on your mind. However, but there are many benefits to exfoliating the skin during the winter. Not only does it slough off dry, dead skin cells, but it also helps regenerate new skin cells. The key is to use a gentle exfoliator that is also very moisturizing and won’t strip moisture from the skin. Add this to your skincare routine once or twice a week at night. After completing this step, slather your skin in a rich moisturizer.

Shower

In the winter, nothing feels better than taking a hot shower or bath. However, hot water not only dehydrates you, but it may also strip away the necessary oils from your body. Hot water evaporates fast, and if the skin is not moisturized quickly, it may crack. Cracks in the skin expose the nerves to air. This can result in what feels like a thousand paper cuts and eczema, or winter’s itch.

If you do indulge in a hot shower or bath, keep your bathroom door closed, and after you dry your body off, moisturize generously.

Also, avoid using excessively hot water to wash your hands. Washing your hands in warm water and might be less irritating to the skin. Always moisturize after washing hands with soap.

Moisturize

We’ve already stated many times to moisturize, but this step is crucial for keeping skin hydrated throughout the winter. Apply a very thick moisturizer as soon as you get out of the bath or shower and then one more time per day to help keep your skin feeling nice and smooth. You can also layer oil on your face and body before applying your cream-based moisturizer to really lock in the hydration.

Avoid the most significant mistake people make hydrating during the winter, which is choosing a lotion instead of a cream. Lotions usually come in pumps, so they’re not as thick, and they’re not as moisturizing. With dry skin, it’s important to use thicker creams or balms, which come in jars or ointments.

Sunscreen

In the summer, you may automatically reach for sunscreen, but most people don’t think to apply it during the winter. Harmful UV rays can still permeate clouds during the darker, dreary days and cause damage. Sunscreen is essential to shield from those harmful UV rays. Choose a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 protection and make sure to cover all the exposed areas of your body.

Non-Surgical In-Office Treatments with Quick Results

These days, both women and men are choosing non-surgical treatments that offer quick, sometimes immediate, results. The benefit of these non-surgical procedures is that they are done in-office. They allow people to skip a long recovery time and eliminate the risk of complications sometimes associated with surgery.

From lasers to injectables to non-surgical facelifts, there are now a plethora of cutting edge options designed to make you appear refreshed, tightened, and years younger than you are

Below we’ll highlight some fantastic non-surgical procedures you can do in-office with quick results so you can continue to look your best!

Facial Treatments

Regular facial treatments will improve the tone, texture, and clarity of your skin. With consistent maintenance, your skin will appear younger and healthier, making you seem more youthful. There are several facial treatments designed to renew and revitalize your skin with minimal downtime.

Corrective facials, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, and peels all provide immediate and long-lasting results.  Consistent treatments will reduce age spots, freckles, and hyperpigmentation (including melasma). They will also soften lines and wrinkles, clear up acne, reduce or phase out acne scars, and stimulate the production of collagen for firmer, more youthful skin.

In-office facial treatments vary from 30 minutes to 90 minutes, and the results are noticeable immediately

Injectables & Dermal Fillers

Men and women can use injectables and dermal fillers to look younger without the downtime or cost of invasive surgery. Injectables and dermal fillers lessen the effects of aging by restoring lost volume, smoothing out wrinkles, plumping flat lips, and correcting hollowed out skin areas.

There are two types of injectables. One works by relaxing facial muscles such as Botox or Dysport, and the other works by plumping up wrinkles or folds, such as Juvederm or Restylane. Both treatments are done in-office and offer almost immediate results.

Non-Surgical Facelift

A non-surgical facelift is a combination of minimally invasive and non-surgical procedures designed to rejuvenate and refresh the appearance of the face. This procedure does not require large incisions, general anesthesia, or overnight hospitalization. Patients are usually in and out of the office quickly, enjoy little post-op discomfort, and minimal recovery time. The results from a non-surgical facelift are significant, as it fills furrows and wrinkles, provides a lifting effect in the face and breasts area, and corrects atrophic scars.

Marvel Cosmetic Surgery performs a less invasive facelift using Adivive™ fat transfer system. This technique uses the body’s existing stem cells (found in fat tissues) to help regenerate tissues.  This procedure provides a more predictable outcome, and harvesting your fat can be more cost-effective than using some types of synthetic fillers. It offers quick, lasting results without invasive surgery or long recovery time.

Laser Treatments

Laser treatments improve the skin’s tone, texture, and appearance. And with all the advancements in laser technology, surgeons are now able to perform a variety of procedures in a minimally invasive way with incredible results.

Laser treatments are done in-office in as little as a 20-minute session. Afterward, patients immediately notice results, such as a youthful glow, softer skin, and reduced pore size. Routine treatments can produce lasting results and keep your skin looking youthful and healthy.

Slowing the Results of Aging with Prejuvenation

Increasingly, younger women are slowing the results of aging with prejuvenation procedures that have become standard aspects of their beauty routines.

When it comes to beauty and overall well being, why wait for the signs of age to take over? It’s better to be proactive and offensive when it comes to stopping the effects of time on your face in the form of wrinkles, creases, crows’ feet, and laugh lines.

How can you prevent the results of aging? What are some procedures you could add to your regimen that would help you keep your youthful appearance?

Let’s take a look at prejuvenation procedures and how they can help you.

Top Prejuvenation Procedures

Most common among the prejuvenation procedures are injectables and fillers. These are non-surgical treatments that provide a youthful look without the cost and downtime of invasive surgery.

It is estimated that over one million men and women annually use injectables and dermal fillers, and many of these users are younger adults who are aiming to prevent aging.

Injectables and dermal fillers lessen the effects of aging skin by:

  • restoring volume around hollowed areas,
  • restoring the contours and smoothness of the face,
  • providing volume and lift to problem areas by smoothing out wrinkles,
  • plumping flat lips, and
  • correcting hollowed skin areas.

There are two types of injectables, those that relax facial muscles and thereby mend facial lines and dermal fillers that plump out wrinkles. Dermal fillers are injected directly into the skin to correct the wrinkle, depression or fold; the filler can be either naturally derived or a synthetic material.

Here’s a brief look at what we offer to patients who are interested in prejuvenation at Marvel Cosmetic.

Injectables

Botox is derived from a family of neurotoxins that relax facial muscles. By temporarily paralyzing muscles it can remove wrinkles cosmetically such as those above the eyebrows on the forehead also called frown lines, lines that form around the corners of eyes, and other facial wrinkles.

Dysport is very similar to Botox as it is from the same family of neurotoxins. With a different formulation, Dysport spreads to a wider area. The onset of Dysport is 2-5 days compared to 4-7 for Botox. There are some reports that results may not last as long as Botox, but this is still being studied.

Fillers

Juvederm: A family of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. An injection corrects moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles and lasts nine months to one year.

Restylane:  A line of hyaluronic acid fillers that provide natural-looking results by smoothing away facial wrinkles and folds.  Providing subtle lip enhancement and smoothing the lines, adding lift and volume to the cheeks.

Voluma: Voluma is also based on hyaluronic acid and used to treat the middle of the face including the nose and associated bony structures. As an HA filler, after injection, it can be shaped and molded into the desired contour. Voluma can last up to two years, almost twice as long as other fillers.

Kybella: The only FDA approved treatment to improve the appearance of extra fat below the chin, commonly known as a “double chin.” The active ingredient is based on a component the body makes for absorbing fat cells and is injected into the affected area of the chin.

Bellafill: A dermal filler that is meant to be a semi-permanent solution for wrinkles by restoring volume and fullness to the skin.  Approved since October 2006 for the treatment of nasolabial fold, commonly know as “smile lines” or “laugh lines,” it is also used for acne scars, and smoothing wrinkles.

Prevention Is The Key to Youthful Skin

Doctors have emphasized the importance of healthy habits in maintaining beautiful, youthful skin: sun protection, healthy diet, and not smoking. These mandates should be a “given,” especially when it comes to preventing wrinkled, creased, and aging skin.

Prejuvenation techniques, such as regular use of injectables and fillers begun before the signs of aging appear, can be an important partner in the war against the effects of time.

Best Skin Care Procedures for Your Twenties, Thirties, and Forties

Best Skin Care Procedures for Your Twenties, Thirties, and Forties

No matter your age, there is a procedure that can help your skin look and feel its best! For skin that is healthy and vibrant, knowing what to expect at each age and stage is the best way to decide which procedure is right for improving your skin’s appearance, regardless of the change.

Twenties

You may have heard the often repeated phrase, “the decisions we make in our twenties can affect us the rest of our life.” This is especially true when it comes to our skin! During our twenties, many of us can experience acne- even if we never did as teenagers.

Sun damage, freckles, dark spots, and the beginnings of wrinkles also may start developing during this period of our lives. When it comes to anti-aging, prevention is key! Some of us may begin to develop fine lines around the corners of our mouths, forehead, and crow’s feet.

Your twenties are a great time to get serious about skincare regiments and cosmetic treatments that focus on anti-aging. Botox and Dysport work fantastically to prevent the formation of deep lines. Gentle laser treatments like Clear + Brilliant are also great for young skin, as they address pigmentation and increase skin porosity.

If you are experiencing early signs of skin sagging or laxity, CO2 Resurfacing treatments can be a great option.

Thirties

At this point, it’s likely you will begin to develop some wrinkles or small dark spots on your skin. You may have lost some elasticity, since our skin’s collagen production slows as we age.

If you haven’t already begun Botox treatments, your thirties are a great time to start. Botox relaxes face muscles that cause wrinkles, and also works to smooth existing wrinkles and prevent new ones from developing.

Laser skin resurfacing can help to treat everything from uneven textures to dark spots, as well as fine lines and wrinkles. There are a variety of different cosmetic lasers available.

While light chemical peels can be great as skin refreshers, using a medium to deep peel will provide a more intense, targeted treatment. These procedures increase skin tightening, brighten skin tone, and improve overall texture. Facial fillers like Juvederm and Restylane can minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles that may have begun to appear throughout the face.

Forties

This period is when women begin to see the most changes in their skin. Wrinkles become more visible, and incorporating regular monthly facials into your skincare routine becomes a must. Because your skin is no longer producing natural structural elements, specifically collagen, as quickly as it did in your 20s and 30s, you may notice one of more of the following: duller complexion, hooding of the eyelids, reduced elasticity in the face, and more pronounced laxity on the face and neck.

Luckily, there are a variety of procedures that can easily address any changes you’ve begun to notice in your skin!

CO2 Resurfacing is a more aggressive type of fractional resurfacing that helps to improve the tone of skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers, such as Juvederm Voluma, can be some of the best anti-aging skincare treatments for your 40s. These fillers smooth fine lines and wrinkles, add volume and definition to lips, and add contour to the face to recreate the fuller, more supple look of younger skin.

Not sure which procedure is right for you? Contact Marvel Cosmetic Surgery at 615-538-0399 to discuss your needs and get started on the path to your best skin!

5 Benefits of Laser Treatments

5 Benefits of Laser Treatments

As we begin to age, we notice our skin begins to change. From wrinkles to spider veins, there are many concerns that start to surface which we would like to change, but topical treatments only go so far. If you’re looking for a rejuvenation regimen that is effective and precise, you’ll want to learn about laser treatments. Lasers work deep within the skin to restore it and offer a more youthful and natural appearance.

Eliminate Acne

From acne to acne scars, laser treatments are effective at reducing the signs of blemishes on the skin and providing individuals with clear skin.  Lasers work to penetrate deep within the dermis to kill the bacteria that causes acne. The high-concentration of monochromatic light evens out the pigmentation and helps to reduce scarring. The combination of efforts means many patients can benefit from two procedures at once. First, there is the reduction of the bacteria, and second, you can rid unwanted acne scarring that has carried over from your youth. The result is fresh, youthful looking skin.

Even Out Skin Tone

Lasers are the latest technology for skin resurfacing, that not only reduce scarring but help restore tone. They can remove wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, and cheeks. Additionally, it can help those who suffer from sunspots that are from overexposure to the sun or aging. The laser works by gently vaporizing the outer layer of sun-damaged or acne scarring to reveal smooth, fresh new skin underneath. Similarly, the laser works to phase out fine lines and wrinkles. The procedure gives your physician control over the application. Recovery time lasts about two weeks and works best for lighter skin tones.

Remove Hair

If you’re not interested in shaving, tweezing, or waxing to remove unwanted hair, laser treatments are an effective way to eliminate them altogether. Effective on almost every area of the body, lasers give precise control over what hairs to remove and can even target hairs that are dark, thick, and coarse.  The procedure is fast, which means your physician can work quickly through larger areas of the body. For example, the upper lip can be completed in minutes, and the back can take roughly an hour. Each pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second and can target multiples hairs at once. The result for most patients is permanent hair loss.

Get Rid of Spider Veins

The tiny red and blue veins with a thread-like appearance near the surface of the skin are known as spider veins. They are caused by increased pressure on the veins and can appear anywhere on the body. However, most individuals will find them on their legs and thighs. For years, there wasn’t much you could do once they started to appear, but with the introduction of laser treatments, adults now have the option to banish them for good. The procedure uses a focused beam of light on the spider vein. As the laser begins to heat up, the vein is destroyed and reabsorbed into the body after 4-6 weeks. Lasers offer precision, which means physicians can target the specific area without damaging the surrounding areas.

Feminine Rejuvenation

For women who have given birth, suffer from urge incontinence, or who have had breast cancer and can’t be on hormones, lasers are a safe and minimally invasive procedure providing tightening, strengthening, and smoothing. It can also help with unwanted secretions, increase blood flow, and sensitivity. The lasers work to stimulate and promote the production of collagen. New skin cells will be produced in the underlying layer of tissue bringing about a smoother, tighter, and healthier skin. Before treatment, a pelvic exam should be performed, and the patient must have had a routine Pap Smear within the last six months. Results are achieved over a span of three months, with the inclusion of rest and temporary abstinence as part of the recovery process.

Your Guide to Flawless Summer Skin

Your Guide to Flawless Summer Skin

Summer is here and that means many of us spend more time outside than in, due to our constant activities or vacations. During these months, many women choose to wear less makeup as they lounge by the pool or relax at the beach. If you are looking for ways to improve the appearance of your skin so you can feel more confident going au naturel too, we’ve highlighted some of the best treatments at Marvel Cosmetic Surgery.

Hyaluronic Enhancer

Hyaluronic acid is an amazing product that makes your skin look younger, fresher, and more subtle. Overall, it’s a skincare superstar and is found naturally in your body. Although the name says acid, it’s not. It’s actually a sugar molecule found in the body that holds almost a thousand times its weight in water. The result is plumper, fresher looking skin. As a facial treatment, it has the ability to smooth out skin and add volume. If you’re looking to obtain natural, dewy skin Hyaluronic Enhancer is a fantastic option.

Botox

Combating fine lines and wrinkles is possible with Botox. Botox is derived from neurotoxins that relax facial muscles. The process encourages patients to limit movements that enhance age lines like furrowing or frowning. What it does not do is add volume to the skin. Instead, it focuses on eliminating wrinkles cosmetically around the eyebrows, mouth, and forehead. The results provide patients with a more youthful complexion.

O2 Lift

An interest in a spa-like experience is completed with the O2 Lift Facial. This facial is a multi-step treatment that infuses oxygen, stem cells, peptides, and a high concentration of botanicals that are designed to exfoliate, illuminate, and oxygenate. The process is safe and great for all skin types. The products used are free from acid and sulfates and work to balance out the skin’s pH leaving you with nothing to the softest and most radiant skin.

Fillers

Fillers are similar to Botox as they are injected into different areas of the face. But while Botox eliminates lines by relaxing the muscles, fillers work to add volume to the skin. The perfect candidate for fillers will have a noticeable loss of volume around the mouth, eyes, jaw, and cheeks. There are a variety of fillers available that provide patients with the youthful, glowing skin they desire. The best part is the utilization of Hyaluronic Acid. Because it’s naturally found in the body, these fillers will work well with almost everyone.

Intense Pulse Light Facial Rejuvenation (IPL)

IPL Facials are designed to improve the appearance of photo-aged skin on both the face and body. It treats broken capillaries and age spots for a smoother looking skin. Additionally, it can reduce the appearance of redness, correct skin pigmentation and irregularities. The treatment uses emissions from high-intensity lasers to treat deep within the dermis. These lasers are filled with plasma and destroy skin cells that may be damaged. It will also induce a natural healing process.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a popular treatment that eliminates dead skin cells but stimulates cell growth. Many patients use it to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, large pores, and other imperfections. It’s a non-invasive procedure which means there are no incisions or scarring. Microdermabrasion is perfect for anyone who is looking to get rid of age spots, sun damage, acne, scares, or hyper-pigmentation. By exfoliating the skin and stimulating collagen production, your skin looks healthier and more rejuvenated.

Protecting Your Skin

The best way to protect your skin is to use sunscreen every day to reduce the chances of getting sun damage or wrinkles. You should apply it under your makeup and wear it regardless of how much sun you plan on getting that day. Even when you drive or sit next to your office window, you are subjecting your face’s delicate cells to UVA and UVB lights that in high doses accelerate aging and sometimes cause cancer.

Additionally, never underestimate the power of water. Your 8 glasses a day are a natural way to remove toxins from your body that can cause your skin to look dull. Try to swap your cokes and coffee with a glass of water as often as you can to keep skin looking youthful.

When Should I Consider a Mommy Makeover?

Mommy Makeover

A Mommy Makeover isn’t one product, but a package of services customizable for each person. The idea is to give mothers an opportunity to restore and reshape areas of their body post-baby. Because of its flexibility, women can add and subtract various surgeries and procedures to tailor the package to their needs, but with so many options available, how do you know which is right for you? We’ve addressed the most common options our clients request when putting together their Mommy Makeover, their benefits, and how you know you are ready!

You Want to Define Curves

For those who are looking to lose weight in the tummy, hips, and thighs, there are liposuction treatments that will get you back to your pre-pregnancy body.

Liposuction

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty and body contouring surgery, is a popular cosmetic procedure that uses suction to remove excess fat deposits from the skin and muscle. This procedure works well on stubborn fat deposits. Read more about Liposuction

SlimLipo™

SlimLipo™ is a liposuction technique that uses laser wavelengths to dissolve fat. And unlike traditional liposuction, there is no need for general anesthesia and extensive downtime. With a few tiny incisions, this laser gently “melts” fat for quick and permanent results. Since the lasers stimulate skin cells into producing collagen and elastin, you can also tighten up the skin;

Special note: Liposuction treatments aren’t a form of weight loss. The right candidate for liposuction has lost most of the baby weight before they undergo surgery. Fat cells are easily reproduced by the body, so you want to be as close to your ideal weight as possible. Read more about SlimLipo™

Tummy Tucks

Tummy tucks are also quite popular and will help dramatically improve your stomach’s appearance by reducing excess fat, skin, and tissue. You can also use this procedure to repair any abdominal separation. You can choose between two options. A Mini Tummy Tuck focuses on the lower abdomen by tightening the muscles and reducing loose skin. This surgical procedure flattens the look of the belly, but with less invasive techniques than a standard tummy tuck. A standard Tummy Tuck focuses on a larger area of the torso. Your doctor can help you decide the best option. Read more about Tummy Tucks

You Want to Restore Lost Breast Volume

If breastfeeding has left you with noticeably thinner or saggy breasts, you have a couple of options to restore lost volume. While you can breastfeed if you have implants, we don’t recommend nursing mothers to undergo surgery.

Breast Lift

A breast lift can help repair and reshape your breasts without the need for implants. Depending on the amount repair required, an incision around the areola or down the breast allows for skin to be tightened and the nipple to be raised. This procedure will help restore your breast to a more youthful position. If a more dramatic look is favored, a breast augmentation can also be a good option to give volume and lift to the chest. Read more about Breast Lift

Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation is another option to restore lost breast volume. Implants can help to balance your figure, boost your confidence and restore volume to your chest. Breast augmentation is a major surgery that does require some recovery time. There are many different sizes, shapes, and fillers available which allows each client to customize the look. Deciding on what shape and size to go with is best discussed in your consultation, just bring along some pictures. Read more about Breast Augmentation

You’re Ready to Smooth Out Lines

Late nights can leave you with noticeable lines around the face and eyes. There are facials, injections, and skin-resurfacing treatments that will help.

Botox®

Botox® works by using Botulinum toxins, which are injected directly into the facial muscle to restrict muscle movement. Deeply etched lines in the face, often created by intense concentration or constant furrowing, will smooth out with regular use. Regular Botox treatments mean preventing new creases from forming while smoothing out the appearance of what you already have. Read more about Botox®

Fillers

Fillers are made with hyaluronic acid which is injected into the face to smooth wrinkles. The filler itself has a gel-like consistency that is injected into the skin to smooth fine lines. These particular fillers can last from 6 to 12 months before being absorbed. Brands such as Juvederm, Juvederm Voluma, and Restylane are all options for those who are interested in the Hyaluronic Acid option. Read more about Fillers

Regardless of the option you choose, the procedure is non-invasive, which means you can start a treatment plan soon after giving birth.

What to Expect When You Try Botox

What to Expect When You Try Botox

Aging is inevitable. Some might take pride in the furrowed lines on their brow, but to others, it’s a problem to rectify. Botox is widely known for its use to reduce the signs of aging. With a few quick injections, deep lines between brows, crow’s feet, and laugh lines are all reduced in appearance.

If you are looking for a way to combat the issues of aging, you might want to consider Botox. Below, we’ve highlighted what it is, how it can work for you, and what you can expect from your treatment plan.

How does Botox Work?

Botox works by using Botulinum toxins, which are injected directly into the facial muscle to restrict muscle movement. Deeply etched lines in the face, often created by intense concentration or constant furrowing, will smooth out with regular use. Regular Botox treatments mean preventing new creases from forming while smoothing out the appearance of what you already have.

Botox Won’t Add Volume

Before getting started, please note that Botox doesn’t plump up sagging skin. Botox paralyzes the muscle rather than adds volume. Injectables work structurally to enhance the shape of your face, with injections to the cheekbones to give a youthful appearance. Additionally, also work to plump areas like your lips or under your eyes, all of which are options for maintaining a healthy glow.

Booking Your Consultation

The consultation is a mini meeting to discuss your treatment plan. You’ll like book some time with a clinician where you will go over all of your desired results and plan a course of action to help you achieve everything on your list and stay within your budget. This is an open discussion where you should air out any concerns and ask as many questions as possible. Your clinician should take the time to walk you through what to expect and give you realistic expectations of the results.

The Appointment

Some medspas and health centers book the consultation and appointment back-to-back, but either way, you’ll want to review the process with your clinician gets started. The initial visit usually takes 30 minutes or longer, with follow-up sessions taking up less time. To prepare for your visit, make sure you eat well and stay hydrated to help any nervousness you might have regarding the procedure.

After the Appointment

Directly following the appointment, you should experience redness and small amounts of swelling to the treated areas. For most individuals, there is little pain associated with the process, but a small number do get dull headaches that can be treated with pain medication. It’s important to note; you might appear puffier directly after because of the swelling. This is only temporary and will balance out with time.

1 Week After Treatment

One week after treatment, you should begin to see the results of the procedure. The areas identified in the process should be smoother and look refreshed. It’s not uncommon to feel your skin is “tight” or “heavy” which is a result of the muscle being paralyzed. They are common side effects for anyone new to the Botox treatment and should subside in another week or two.

1 – 3 Months After the Treatment

The first month after the Botox treatment will still be very effective and provide you with a healthy and younger looking complexion. Some individuals will find they can feel a small amount of movement return around the one-month mark, but it will depend on the treated area. By three months, you should feel the gradual return of movement. It’s around this time you will want to book another appointment to continue your treatment plan.

If you are ready to see what Botox can do for you, call us at 615-329-3900 to book your consultation today! Our expertly trained staff can work with you to develop a treatment plant specifically designed for your needs.

5 Ways to Refresh Your Skin This Winter

5 Ways to Refresh Your Skin This Winter

It’s hard to believe, but it’s that time of year again. The holidays are among us which means loads of time spent with family and friends celebrating and in this digital age you can expect lots of photos! It’s easy to forget about your skincare routine between all the planning and gift shopping, so we’ve put together five ways to refresh your skin just in time for those holiday memories!

Deep condition

The winter months bring about the colder weather which lacks moisture and harsh winds only make your skin worse. Protecting yourself from dryness will eliminate red, flaky skin. We highly recommend swapping out your lotion for a cream moisturizer. While most brands will offer both options, the most significant difference between the two is the water content. Lotions have a higher volume of water that leads to dry skin in the winter. Swapping out your current option with cream provides your skin with a protective layer against dehydration. We love Cerave creams; they are the number one dermatologist recommended facial moisturizer and come in a variety of thicknesses for all skin types.

Medical Peel

Medical peels are a great way to restore skin elasticity and brighten the face which is exactly what you want when it comes to holiday photos. There are a few medical peels that provide amazing results that are perfect for this time of year:

Phyto-Pumpkin Peel – This enzyme peel helps glycolic-sensitive skin. It contains Vitamin A and Beta Carotene, ideal for adding a healthy glow to the surface. Because of the gentle exfoliation, this peel works on all skin types, especially those prone to rosacea.

VI Peel® – The VI Peel® contains a synergistic blend of ingredients suitable for all skin types. This peel works at the cellular level to tackle skin problems such as fine lines, wrinkles, and shrinking enlarged pores. With the help of many acids and vitamins, it’s efficient at reducing hyperpigmentation and acne.

Illuminize Peel – Known as the “Liquid Microdermabrasion,” this light peel contains Phytic, Mandelic, Malic, and Salicylic Acids, along with Resorcinol, to rejuvenate the skin. Because it is a lighter treatment, it works well for teens or those who have never had a medical peel.

Drink Plenty of Water

It’s hard to hear, but we highly suggest putting down that Pumpkin Spiced Latte and picking up a glass of water. It’s easy to believe that you need to drink more water in the summer rather than winter due to the humidity, but the lack of moisture during these colder months causes unnecessary dehydration. Your skin is your largest organ but is usually the last to receive nutrients. It should be noted that there is a difference between dry and dehydrated skin. Dry skin is a condition you’re born with, and you know it pertains to you because other areas of your body (hands, feet, scalp) are also dry. Dehydrated skin appears when your water intake is low. Either way, your entire body will benefit from an increase of water, by flushing out toxins and plumping up your skin.

Face Fillers

If you want to plump up your skin and reverse signs of aging, face fillers are a great option. There are two kinds to choose from:

Injectables: Injectables is a blanket term for a procedure that transfers product directly into the skin and muscle tissue via a syringe to help reduce the signs of aging. Botox and Fillers both use this method and obtain favorable results, but they each perform in entirely different ways. We’ll discuss the differences below so you can choose which one is right for you.

Fillers: Fillers differ from Botox because they are injected into the contours of your face, not to paralyze, but to add volume or plump specific areas.

Some fillers are made with hyaluronic acid which fills in wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is a substance your body naturally produces to keep skin plump and hydrated. Since it already occurs in the body, these fillers are less likely to cause an allergic reaction. The filler itself has a gel-like consistency that is injected into the skin to smooth fine lines.

Best Procedures to Reduce the Signs of Aging

Reduce Signs of Aging

The easiest way is to start drinking plenty of water and make sure to apply sun screen and moisturizer daily. However, even with meticulous care, frown lines and wrinkles will happen. Because September is National Healthy Aging Month, we want to share with you the best procedures to reduce the signs of aging.

Botox

Botox is widely known for its use to reduce the signs of aging. With a few quick injections, deep lines between brows, crow’s feet, and laugh lines are all reduced in appearance.

Injectables

Fillers differ from Botox because they are injected into the contours of your face, not to paralyze, but to add volume or plump specific areas.

Made with hyaluronic acid fillers smooth out wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is a substance your body naturally produces to keep skin plump and hydrated. Since it already occurs in the body, these fillers are less likely to cause an allergic reaction. The filler itself has a gel-like consistency that is injected into the skin to smooth fine lines. These particular fillers can last from 6 to 12 months before being absorbed. Brands such as Juvederm, Juvederm Voluma, and Restylane are all options for those who are interested in the Hyaluronic Acid option.

Fat Transfers

Noninvasive fat transfers – or micro-lipo injection – add volume to the skin in the face and hands, giving you a more rested, youthful appearance. By using your body’s unwanted fat, the procedure reduces crow’s feet, laugh lines and ridges that appear as a normal part of aging. Along with improving the skin’s appearance and reversing the signs of aging, fat transfers can also repair and reconstruct skin damaged by trauma or surgery.

Vitamin C Peel

Vitamin C is one of the best-known defenses against free radicals. This peel is an option for anyone who suffers from acne because it deeply cleanses the pores and provides an anti-bacterial action to prevent acne from reappearing. The acid found in Vitamin C also works as a bleaching agent, which can help restore imbalanced skin tone and help fade blemishes.

Vitalize Peel

The Vitalize Peel uses a combination of AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Beta Hydroxy Acids), along with Retinol, to give a more corrective exfoliation for the skin. Our most popular facial treatment and suitable for melasma, sun damage, acne, post hyper-inflammatory acne, fine lines and all-over tone and texture of skin. For best results, you should consider a series of three visits.

CO2 Laser

CO2 laser is the latest technology for skin resurfacing. It’s designed to help remove wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, and cheeks.
