Tummy Tuck FAQs

Tummy tucks – also known as abdominoplasties – are one of the most common procedures performed by cosmetic surgeons. Tummy tucks have become more popular not only because of the dramatic results most patients show but also because of our focus on health and fitness. Recent advances in the operation offer better pain control and a smoother recovery. Here are a few of our patients’ most common questions about this operation.

“Do I need a full tummy tuck, or can I have a smaller scar – for example, with a “mini” tummy tuck or just liposuction?”

Every tummy tuck is slightly different, since everyone’s problem areas are different. Some patients have too much loose skin, some have lots of stretch marks, some have too much fat, and some people’s muscles been stretched or separated by pregnancy. People with tight skin can benefit from procedures which result in reduced scarring approach, such as liposuction, an endoscopic abdominoplasty, or a mini-abdominoplasty. If there is a lot of loose skin that needs tightening, you will require a longer scar. We always try to keep scars as short as possible, but what matters most is how your skin and waist look after surgery, since tummy tuck scars are hidden under shorts and a bathing suit.

Will a tummy tuck help my stretch marks?”

Absolutely. After pregnancy, most women’s stretch marks are below their belly buttons, and this is the skin that is removed in a tummy tuck. Unlike lasers and creams (which I don’t think I have ever seen help anyone at all, once they’re a year out from having their last baby), an abdominoplasty completely removes this skin, making your entire abdomen look like the much less damaged skin between your ribcage and your belly button – but even better, since even that undamaged skin is stretched and looks better than before!

“How much discomfort will I have after a tummy tuck?”

Years ago, tummy tucks were frequently performed in hospitals, and many patients could not stand straight up for a week or two. We perform all of our tummy tucks in one of our two outpatient surgery centers, so our patients are up and walking on the first night after surgery. Most patients need 3 or 4 days of a mild narcotic pain reliever and are back to their normal light activities about two days after they stop taking pain medicine. People who had had a prior C-section say that the discomfort is a 2-3 if the C-section pain was a 10.

“How long is the recovery after a tummy tuck?”

The answer to this question depends on what you mean by “recovery.” All our patients are walking around their homes on the first day after surgery. Most people are able to get out of the house for light exercise and shopping (but NO HEAVY LIFTING) on the third or fourth day after surgery. You can drive a car about a week after surgery, and you can start lower body aerobic exercise (a recumbent stationary bike is the best at this stage) at ten days after surgery. After that, it is up to you and how you feel, but you can’t lift anything heavier than 30 pounds until a month after surgery because we don’t want anything to mess up the muscle tightening you’ve gotten.

“Will the results last?”

Absolutely! As long as your weight remains fairly stable, abdominoplasties are usually a ‘one and done’ procedure, which does not need to be repeated. Of course, your skin will continue to age after surgery, but it almost never gets back to the looseness that you had before surgery.

“After pregnancy, my tummy needs help, but my breasts do, too. Can you work on both at the same time?”

Absolutely. Lots of patients have changes to both their abdomen and their breasts after childbirth and nursing. Combining abdominal and breast contouring after pregnancy is so common that it has a name – “mommy makeover.” Combining these procedures makes a lot of sense, because you save a little money on the operations and can combine your recovery times, making it easier to fit both operations into your hectic schedule.

What is the Obalon Procedure for Weight Loss?

You’re likely familiar with the feeling of overeating: your pants are tight, you feel “stuffed,” and the thought of putting one more bite in your mouth is inconceivable.

The Obalon procedure for weight loss works a lot like Thanksgiving dinner or an all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet does. The Obalon weight loss system helps facilitate weight loss by taking up space in your stomach so you eat less.

Three balloons are placed for a six-month, non-surgical treatment. This is combined with a professionally supervised nutrition and exercise program for optimal weight loss. With balloons taking up space in your stomach, you feel full quicker and eat less.

The placement of each Obalon balloon typically takes less than 10 minutes and does not require sedation. In our office, you swallow a capsule containing a small balloon and then the doctor will inflate the balloon. In the clinical study after placement. Most patients return to normal activities with no downtime.

Benefits of the Obalon Procedure for Weight Loss

Among the ever-popular effective, low-risk, and minimally invasive weight loss solutions, Obalon stands out as a proven success. Patients with the Obalon Balloon System and diet and exercise lost approximately twice as much weight as those with diet and exercise alone.

Some other benefits of the Obalon procedure include:

  • The Obalon Balloon System helps jump-start your weight loss journey for long-term results.
  • Average of 89% of weight loss was kept off at one year (six months post-removal) when combined with a moderate intensity diet and exercise program.
  • Less than 1% of adverse events were severe or serious in nature (see safety information).
  • First and only swallowable, lightweight balloon
  • Less expensive than weight loss surgery
  • Each balloon placement takes less than 10 minutes
  • No anesthesia needed for placement
  • Fully reversible

What is Lipo 360?

Lipo 360 is an all-inclusive liposuction procedure that is used to contour and shape the midsection, 360 degrees around. The possible areas for treatment are the upper and lower abdominals, the flanks on both sides, and the lower and mid-back.

We utilized the best cosmetic surgery practices to develop a comprehensive range of liposuction procedures designed to lift, tone, and contour your body. What makes this procedure truly unique is the ability to give you the custom results that you want.

How Lipo 360 Works

First, you’ll meet with a patient care coordinator and one of our surgeons. They will listen to your needs and make recommendations based on how you’d like to shape and define your body.

Lipo 360 uses a vacuum to target and suction fat from specific areas in the midsection. Our surgeons use special techniques to accentuate your natural curves and create a dramatic yet natural-looking result. In some cases, the surgeon may also use a laser in addition to traditional liposuction to help melt fat and tighten the skin.

Another added benefit of Lipo 360 is that it does not require general anesthesia. Most patients require only IV sedation for this procedure.

The Recovery

Downtime for Lipo 360 is minimal and most patients can return to normal activities within just a few days. But with any surgical procedure, downtime can vary, and following post-op instructions is a must. Your doctor will provide you with specific guidelines to follow to ensure you get the best results and heal quickly. Be prepared to avoid strenuous activities and exercise following your procedure as your body will need time to heal.

The Right Candidate for Lipo 360

The ideal candidate for Lipo 360 will be within their ideal body weight and someone looking to remove fat from trouble areas that are not easily fixed by exercise alone. Lipo 360 works wonders because it targets both small and large areas of the body to contour and shape.

Are You a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

Are You a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

The midsection is often ranked as the area that causes people the most insecurities. Sometimes a healthy diet and exercise simply doesn’t cut it, especially if the excess weight is a result of giving birth. Regardless of the reasons, tummy tucks are a great option to get the slimmer figure you want. If you’re interested in the procedure, read on to discover whether or not you are a good candidate.

Tummy Tuck Surgery

Before we can dive into candidacy, we should take a closer look at what the surgery entails. If you are considering a Tummy Tuck, it’s worth noting there are two different options available.

Mini vs. Traditional Tummy Tummy Tuck

A Mini Tummy Tuck focuses on the lower abdomen by tightening the muscles and reducing loose skin. This is a surgical procedure that flattens the look of the belly, but with less invasive techniques than a standard tummy tuck. A standard Tummy Tuck focuses on a larger area of the torso.

Regardless of which option you choose, the procedure itself is beneficial for those who are roughly within 20% of their ideal body weight. The results are permanent, but as with most procedures involving fat, any form of weight gain will alter the effects. It’s important to note that a tummy tuck shouldn’t be used as a method to lose weight. If unhealthy eating habits continue, the results of the tummy tuck will only be superficial.

Good Candidates for Tummy Tucks

A suitable candidate for a tummy tuck is someone who is currently within their ideal body weight. The procedure is successful at removing unwanted and stubborn fat and toning. It is not, however, a weight loss solution. Fat cells can reform any time your diet changes with increased calories.

If you are at your ideal body weight, but looking to move stubborn fat, a tummy tuck can work wonders. Because procedure gives you the ability to target localized areas, you can work in small and large regions of the body to give you a sleeker look. A suitable candidate will also have good skin elasticity.

Additionally, the best candidates for Tummy Tucks are non-smokers who are physically healthy and have realistic expectations of their results. To get a better idea of the results you can likely expect, we recommend taking the time to research a qualified surgeon and viewing before and after photos.

Tummy Tucks After Childbirth

Tummy tucks are safe for women who have had children. It is wise, however, for a woman to only choose a tummy tuck once she’s decided to no longer have children, as the effects of childbirth could alter the result of the original surgery.

Length of Procedure & Recovery

The length of the surgery will vary depending on the amount of work you wish to have done. Tummy tucks are a surgical procedure that requires the individual to undergo anesthesia and could take several weeks of recovery – as do most surgical procedures. That being said, it is wise to do your research to find a cosmetic surgeon that has the correct qualifications to achieve the results you want. We also recommend looking at before and after photos.

How to Tackle Stubborn Belly Fat

Liposuction Nashville TN

They’re referred to as love handles but you may know it as stubborn belly fat. However, most people don’t love those extra inches padding their abdomen. For many people, this area is their biggest complaint and the most challenging place to lose weight. Even active people, who don’t indulge in extra calories and maintain a healthy body weight, still find it extremely hard to shed those stubborn inches.

If you are frustrated by your midsection, don’t throw in the towel just yet. Instead, try these tips to tackle stubborn belly fat.

Say No to Added Sugars

The American Heart Association recommends no more than six tablespoons of added sugar each day. That’s roughly 100 calories of sugar. When you add more sugar to your diet, you add more stress on your liver. This extra stress means your body stops processing food, hormones, and cortisol (stress hormones) properly. When this happens, excess fat begins to be stored around your abdomen. Sugar is found in almost everything, but it’s especially high in processed foods. So, next time you’re at the grocery store, be sure to read the label and check for sugar content.

Eat Healthy Fats

When we indulge too much in saturated fats, our body turns it into visceral fat that pads our midsection. Saturated fats are found in milk, dairy, and fatty meat products. If you are serious about toning your stomach, you will need to limit your saturated fat intake. Instead, increase your intake of fats that are good for you such as, monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats. These healthy fats are found in foods like avocados, fatty fish, nuts, seeds, and oils such as olive or canola.

Eat More Protein and Veggies

Eating lean protein is an excellent way to blast belly fat. Greek yogurt, lean meats, fish, and beans are fantastic sources of lean protein. Filling yourself up with more fruits and veggies instead of complex carbs also means you won’t be adding extra pounds around your middle. Aim to take in 25 grams of protein per meal to shed those inches.

High-intensity Cardio and Resistance Training

Melt stubborn inches and boost your metabolism by exercising smarter. Planks, sit-ups, and crunches on their own just won’t cut it. Recent studies show that individuals who participate in high-intensity interval training had smaller waistlines than those who only focused on cardio or strength training. Next time you’re at the gym, workout smarter by incorporating these exercises.

Liposuction

If you are at your ideal body weight but just can’t shed that stubborn fat, liposuction is an option to consider. Liposuction targets specific areas on the body, contouring and sculpting those problems away. Because liposuction reduces excess fat but it doesn’t tighten the skin, appropriate skin elasticity is beneficial to the recovery process. An ideal candidate will be at a healthy weight and have excellent skin elasticity.
