Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a cosmetic procedure removing excess breast fat, tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion to the body. Additionally, the procedure alleviates the discomfort with overly large breasts.
Many women are unhappy with their large breasts. They can cause discomfort while exercising, neck and back pain, or skin irritation. They can also prevent you from wearing the clothes you would like to wear. Breast reduction surgery can reduce this pain and give you a more proportional look.
A Smaller Cup Size for Greater Comfort
Many candidates for breast reduction surgery have heavy, sagging breasts that are large or disproportionate for their body size. Others have one breast that is noticeably larger than the other. Age and overall health are also factors to consider when determining if a patient is a good candidate. During your initial consultation, Dr. Jeffrey Marvel will discuss you your cosmetic concerns and goals.
Candidates for this procedure are women who:
- Out of proportion breasts relative to body size
- Skin irritation beneath the breasts
- Experience shoulder indentations from bra straps
- Breast size restricts activity
Breast Reduction – What to Expect
Breast reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure performed in our surgery center in either Nashville or Tullahoma Tennessee. It requires general anesthesia and takes about two hours. During your surgical reduction procedure, Dr. Marvel will make an incision to remove excess breast tissue. He will then move the tissue and the nipple to restore the shape of the breast. Drains will also be placed in the treatment area at that time to remove any excess fluid.
The most common side effects are swelling, numbness or sensitivity of the breasts. The healing process depends on the techniques used during the procedure. You will need to wear an elastic bandage around your breasts for about two to three days following surgery, as well as a surgical bra for about a month to aid in healing. Within two weeks, you should be back to normal daily activities, but heavy lifting and other strenuous activity should be avoided for at least a month.
Reduction surgery not only reduces the pain associated with larger breasts, but it can also allow you to live your life the way you desire. You can exercise, wear the clothes you want, and feel more confident about your body. Call 615-329-3900 or contact us today to set up a complimentary consultation with Dr. Marvel.
